That looks like a Savage Axis. What caliber is she running? I restocked a Youth Axis 2 in 243 Winchester to make a compact general purpose rifle. I plan to take it out on Friday.
I took my last deer in 2017. I had a shot at a great six-pointer last year but choked. I’ve seen more deer this year than the last six years combined. I have great hopes for muzzleloader season.
In New York State. The average is one harvest every 7 years. By that reckoning, some folks...
I’m okay with the size. I would have rather killed a doe. My primary purpose for hunting that property is deer management.
I’m more bummed with by poor aim. If the shot were three inches lower, the deer would but have not suffered.
Muzzleloaders aren’t the fastest shooters and my Optima is...
Well, it’s meat…
Nothing really went right today. I’m sitting under a tree with my new CVA Optima V2 muzzleloader looking to fill my DMP tag.
Out steps a smallish, antlerless deer. I study it through my scope trying to discern any buttons or spikes. The forehead seems completely smooth...
Since I hunt in land that is open to other hunters, I’m disinclined to set up anything long-term. I’ve invested a lot of time scouting different spots and I don’t want to give that away.
I bought a bigger blind. I’ll probably set up a tree stand as well.
I pretty much just use a half-blind or natural cover when I hunt deer with a firearm.
I have a small spring steel pop-up blind that works pretty well for turkeys. But, There’s not really enough room inside to draw a bow in all directions. I had a plump doe come in to about 20 yards and started browsing. She was just over my left shoulder and I couldn’t turn around in the blind...
I was out walking in the woods with my shotgun and I saw an anterless deer. I thought it might be the same forkie from last week. So, I quietly pursued it through the woods to confirm. Much to my surprise, she was set upon by a mature buck. It came to about 39 yards. A had enough time to...
Too bad it wasn’t a legal buck. Those forkie are pretty tender and are easy to drag out of the woods. All the same, it’s better to pass and hope it makes it to next fall.
I thought it might be a doe until it turned to look at me. It had a single forked left antler and a button in the...
I’m not sure it is a matter of energy. Grouping at an indoor range of the bench is an academic exercise. I have no problem hitting 6 inch steel plates at 300 yards.
However, I’ve done a fair amount of squirrel hunting with a 22. Shooting in field introduces a whole new set of variables...
usually tell people to get the CZ, Begara, or Ruger Precision Rimfire. But, that seems unrealistic right now.
I’ve had good luck with the building an 10/22 clone with a Brownells receiver. It doesn’t have the legs of the CZ because the integrated rail lacks the 30 MOA base in the CZ...
The poi was a couple inches higher. I did a rough adjustment to the elevation. There’s a group just off the top edge of the paper above the upper-left aimer.
The weather kept me inside today. It gave me a good chance to do some 22LR load testing.
I have a good supply of both CCI standard velocity and Federal American Eagle high velocity both in 40 grain lead round nose. I was curious which would group better at 100 yards.
Work with me...
I was standing behind a tree. The deer was on an upward slope. Maybe a 10-percent incline. The arrow was only about 10 yards from where I shot. I’m guessing the arrow impacted about 12 feet high.
I’m working up game loads for 6.5 PRC using 140 gr. Nosler Ballitic Tips. The have BC of 0.509. Not as good as ELDX. But, they should have better terminal performance.
All I had to load them was done IMR 4831. The LGS had three pounds on hand last fall and I snagged it. It’s a magnum...
I was all by myself at the range this morning. So, I was able to catch some video clips of some load testing.
With a dearth of Hornady ELD match bullets, I picked up about 600 140 grain HPBT to feed both my 6.5 CM and 6.5 PRC. I also found some Lapua 6.5 CM small primer brass. I loaded some...
It was first blood for the Ruger American Rimfire 22LR “Go Wild” this morning.
I found a hive of squirrel along an abandoned road by some primitive campsites inside a state forest west of Kingston.
I bagged two between 7 and 8 AM. Both from standing off-hand at about 15 yards.
A passing...
This morning, I was sitting at one of the local MUA wood lots surrounded by no squirrels getting frustrated and depressed. I decided for a change of scenery.
At hand was the 30’s vintage Iver Johnson Champion 12 ga that I picked up at a gun show about 7 years ago. It has a 28 inch full choke...
I use 31 grains of CFE BLK. The muzzle velocity pushes 2600 FPS from a 16-inch barrel on a nice day. Your mileage may vary. But, the compact x39 case dies not waste any powder in a shorter barrel.
Depending on the actual bore diameter of your barrel, loading .308 bullets might not yield optimum results. I think some one Ruger M77s were chambered in 7.62x39 had .308 bores. But, my American Ranch in 7.62x39 has a .310 bore. Luckily, .310 bullets designed for 7.62x39 are available...
I’ve got tags for 3M and 3J myself. I’ve already scouted my secret spots for next week. I’m pretty excited, but the most I’ll get is probably west-Nile virus. Mosquitoes are pretty bad from the rain and does will smell bug repellent a half a mile away.
We’re a week into September and...
As long as the scope doesn’t project a beam of light, laser, or infrared radiation, I think you’re good. But, save that for Coyote. In New York State, the most you’ll need is a 3-8x40 zeroed 2 inches high at 100 yards. You’ll miss your shot fiddling with such a gadget.
I don’t want people to get the wrong idea. I think the accuracy is pretty good.
I think there are things inherent to the 22LR platform that keep it from maximum potential accuracy unless you start dropping cash into custom barrels, chassis, and match ammo. My out-of-box CZ is only slightly...
I took the rifle to Sheepdog Warrior and shot it at 50 yards and 100 yards. I was shooting the Automatch again. The groups at 50 yards were about 3/4 inch, which is good standard for squirrels. I estimated hold-over and windage to hit the steel at 100 yards and did so consistently.
The...
I have 3 10/22s. A custom built target tactical, a Green Mountain target sporter, and a nearly factory carbine. The green mountain sporter is the only delicated squirrel rifle I owned before the go wild. I have one of the tri-mags. The 10/22 don’t get much love recently because they are...
Yesterday, I stopped by a certain big-boxed sporting good store to get a couple t-shirts. I walked back through the hunting/fishing department to check on ammo availability and was delighted to spot a Ruger American Rimfire with the go-wild camo stock.
Being a huge Ruger fanboy, I had...
I haven't ordered anything from TSUSA for nearly six months. Even then, it was vastly overprices 7.62x30 bulk ammo.
Spoilers: the best thing is the box it all came in.
Unboxing videos are so 2005.
I was at an undisclosed location with my CZ455. I was trying to stretch its legs. The wind was pretty fierce, as you can see from the mirage. I cut the video to exclude some private conversation on the range.
I was shooting at a 10x10 inch plate at 270 yards. For the mathematically...
They’re not protected. They’re just considered poor sport. They are strictly varmints.
I was wondering, if he would make a feeder for them. That would limit his field of fire and make it safer to shoot in the backyard.
