Over the last few years, I’ve saved hundreds of empty Federal 223 cases. Most of it has only been fired once.
I have a life-time supply of Norma 223 cases from a recent bulk ammo purchase. So, I’ll probably never use the Federal cases.
If someone is new to reloading and want an instant supply...
I returned to SW this week. I got dialed in to the 400 yards know-your-limits target. I was able to his the 1.5 inch target four out of six tries. I cannot confirm or deny other long-range targets were hit.
I was able to chronograph these Sierra 69 gr. Matchking HP loads from my 223...
As you may know, I recently acquired a Ruger PC9 Carbine. I love it so much, when I saw 10/22 carbines on sale, I decided to make it a friend.
Here are my Ruger BFFs.
Ruger PC9 Carbine 9mm Luger.
Ruger 10/22 Tactical/Target 22LR
* Magpul X22 Stock
* Green Mountain 18 inch fluted blued...
This is a fair criticism. I personally don’t think range fees are prohibitively high. Given what is available, the fees might even be described as competitive. Spending the whole day there is going to cost some coin. But, that will just keep people focused on shooting and not socializing...
It seems like that already, when it comes to access to hunting property. Property access is a huge barrier to entry for the common person as you get closer to the city. Placed like Sterling and Stewart get pretty crowded. Even the local corners where I hunt squirrel are pretty crowed in...
I spent a cold morning shooting at Sheepdog Warrior near Catskill. They have some covered shooting benches and steel targets set up out to 650 yards or so. You don’t need any special equipment at all.
I took my Savage Axis 2 223 with the 55 gr. Norma Tac 223 I have never shot the thing...
The DEC releases on Stewart and Vernooy. I was walking across a field while squirrel hunting in Stewart and flushed a pheasant. I was like, “ What a good looking bird, wait, I can eat that, damn, it flew away”
Lots of city folk don’t approve of coyote hunting. The rabid coyote start showing up in Westchester and the Bronx. They jump right on board.
I was amazed how fast they adopted special early bear season downstate. The went from “How can you slaughter such a noble creature?” to “Fck those...
I'm kinda thinking the SAFE act was *intended* to stop you from owning an AR in New York State. Any component that brings to a rifle in compliance is abusive of that intent. Thankfully, laws written to enforce that intent directly are unconstitutional.
Ironically, as the SAFE act was...
I'm toying with the idea of a proper compliant AR-15. But, that looking a little spendy for me right now. I'd love to get a stripper lower and buy the rest of the gun on the "installment plan." That is, buy them parts a few at a time and install them.
I shoot from using a rest when I'm zeroing it. This rest will turn in 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with my 223 varmint. Of course, the dot is 3 MOA. I shouldn't expect puny groups.
I don't think cleaning the PC9 is particularly complex. Anyone who has cleans a Ruger 10/22 should be at...
Funny, yes? Taccom makes a small rail that mounts wear the rear sight goes.
This has a few advantages.
1. The sight alignment is not effected by take-down.
2. The sight is lower, Thus, it allows a better cheek weld.
3. I'm hoping the front sight will co-witness with the red dot.
The...
I agree, 25 yards is pointless for bench shooting. But, 25 yards is not bad for practicing off-hand positions both sitting and standing.
I go to Davis in Goshen once a week to bench shoot at their 100 yard range. But, shooting from the bench is all that is allowed for rifles. The 25 yard...
Ok. I’ve registered for the defensive carbine class. It sounds interesting.
I’m looking for some personal opinions or experience. The factory sights don’t work very well with my bifocals. I have a Nikon 1.5-4.5x20 Tactical P scope and a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. Which do you like better for...
Hey.
I’m the proud owner of a new Ruger PC9 carbine. It is fun to shoot. But, I think I need some training, if I want it to be anything more than an expensive plinker.
I have experience hunting and bench shooting, but no experience with tactical shooting.
I live in Ulster county. Any...
Aftermarket barrels for CZ are really spendy and a little too rich for me. This barrel is a factory barrel from CZ. Barrel sets for the CZ455 are really easy to install. Right now I have a 22 LR sporter barrel, a 17 HMR sporter, and this 22LR heavy barrel. The heavy barrel wouldn't fit in the...
I recently upgraded my CZ 455 22LR with a CZ 22LR heavy barrel and Boyd's thumb-hole stock. I'll make a proper range report when after I do some ammo testing and have broken in the barrel a bit. I still have less that 250 rounds through it. But, the results have been very encouraging.
I'm...
I upgraded my CZ455 with a heavy barrel and laminate thumbhole stock. I mean it primarily for range shooting. But, I thought to get the new barrel blooded.
The weather was a cool, cloudy, and breezy 50 degrees. With the foliage in full swing, it is getting easier to see the squirrels. I...
The 20 grain 17 HMR gampoints are laser accurate. But, they don’t seem to put the squirrels down reliably when the squirrel is hit away from a vital area. Nearly every squirrel not hit in the head or heart tries to crawl off. Some try to crawl being cripped or gutted by a poorly aimed shot...
I went out on Thursday morning. I set up about an hour before sunrise and almost immediately heard coyote yapping away. I kinda figured deer would be a bust.
I also figured I’m pretty outta shape with the bow. I haven’t practiced near enough. I might go out later in the season, if I can get...
Ending September on a high note.
I mounted a new Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 scope to my Savage 93R17 17 HMR and took it out this morning on a little shake down. I was very pleased with the results. I was able to shoot the limit. I also spotted 3 whitetails. I feel good about bow season...
Squirrel calls seem to fall into three categories: Cutting, distress, and barking.
The quarters are a variation of the cutting call. I’ve have a homemade cutting call fashioned from a threaded tube and a washer.
Honestly, the only call I’ve had any luck with is the squirrel distress whistle...
On reflection, use whatever ammo your gun likes best. I’ve spent a lot of time at the gun range testing different loads. The most important thing is is practice with the ammo you intend to use.
The character of the environment changes as the season changes. As the leaves fall and the snow comes, the range will increase from less than 25 yards in September to nearly 100 yards in February.
Subsonic ammo is more accurate in my rifles, it is also quieter. The flattest part of the...
It is the excellent and economical Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40. I usually zero at 25 yards in september loading CCI segmented subsonic. I’ll rezero to 50 later in the season when I switch to minimags.
Sadly, they no longer manufacture this scope. They updated the design to the Prostaff...
The squirrels in these woods seemed pretty overpopulated during last deer season. I took a couple dozen during January and February. I was hoping the remaining squirrels would be healthier.
It was a disappointing Sunday morning in the woods. The high winds made it difficult to track squirrels in the trees. I was able to take on on the ground. But, it had discoloration on its hind quarters. I threw it to the coyotes.
First blood for Savage Model 93R17 17HMR.
