I'm looking to do a little trapping in the Finger Lakes region. And, I do mean a little. I only plan to put out a half dozen traps. When have you noticed the fur going into prime? I really only want to take a couple animals, so I want the fur to be at it's most prime.
pretty much. I missed two deer with my bow this year (both arrows hit something on their way to the deer and deflected). They'll still be there this coming up weekend.
I could always send it out to have it heat treated. But, you're looking at $5 shipping there, $10 per blade, then $5 shipping back. Supposedly O1 is one of the more forgiving steels to do the way I mentioned. If/when I start using 440c or AEB-L, I'll just pay to have it done.
No forging for this. The steel is already precision ground to 1/8", so it's at the thickness I want. I do want to start forging eventually. It's not in the plans quite yet though.
This is O1 tool steel, so it's pretty easy to heat treat. My plan is to build a little house out of fire brick (7...
It's possible. I have a couple pens I have to make first, including one when the forum hits 1000 members. The steel was about $15 per blade (expensive when only ordering enough for 2) and those ziricote scales were about $30. I have no idea how much sandpaper, cut off wheels, drill bits, or...
Here is my build thread for my first knife. My birthday was this past week, and my wife bought me a piece of O1 tool steel. It is 1/8" thick by 2" wide by 18" long. It is enough to make two fixed blade skinning/hunting knives with a full tang. Here is a rough outline of the knife I'm planning on...
Grinding for now. I don't have the necessary room for a forge. I'm on the lookout for an anvil and could probably make it work if I found a great deal on one. I have a large table saw, large wood lathe, planer, jointer, chop saw, drill press, bench grinder, belt and disk sander, a full size 17'...
They can't go out and say, "Everyone is now getting 75% of what is promised." The state basically wants to use the funds that are currently sitting unused. They want access to the money now and give an, "I owe you when the time for you to collect." The chances on a state not paying out what...
If 34 to 35 of them lean right, how come the Republicans don't have a majority in the Senate? Republicans hold 31 seats. Democrats hold 23. 9 more Democrats caucus with the Republicans. Those 9 Democrats probably wouldn't be elected into the Senate if they ran as Republicans. Even if it's...
I'd use every one of those knives in that set. It's unfortunate that there is no carver and fork. I use the carver pretty frequently.
What are you going to do with your old set?
Yup, using an angle grinder, slow speed grinder, and a belt sander. Maybe some files. You put the bevels on with files or the belt sander. If you YouTube search "stock removal knife" it will bring up some videos.
Makes sense
I want to get a forge and anvil, but I'm not there yet. I'll be starting with stock removal. Basically, I'll buy a metal bar the correct thickness, draw the knife outline, and cut/grind it out. I've got an angle grinder, slow speed bench grinder, and a 4x36" belt sander (it should...
Yeah, they are pretty similar. Their composition is a little different, and you harden them a little different, but their final characteristics are similar. O1 is a little easier to find in precision ground, I think. I think my wife is going to get it from Amazon for my Birthday.
The title says it all, do you guys like the look of liners on your fixed blade knives? I'm looking at making my first knife. It's going to be O1 with ziricote scales. It will primarily be used as a hunting and meat processing knife. I was thinking King about adding some orange or light colored...
