I've used those for decades. The guys that introduced me to hunting had been using them for years before that. They're good - too good sometimes. Your feet sweat easily and being rubber, they don't dry out. I fire up the boot dryer after every hunt with them. But... even with damp feet, your toes don't usually get numbingly cold. I've taken to using the heat packs for days like Saturday. Even if I sweat a little walking in, the heat packs will allow me to sit all day.

Mickey guys, what do you use for traction? I have a pair, but the soles are almost complete worn out, and aren't good for snow anymore.

Can't say I've had that problem. My uppers are cracked up pretty bad and I doubt they're totally waterproof anymore but they were used when I got them 20 years ago.
If I'm doing any more walking than just into and out of a stand location, I'll wear something lighter.

Congrats to everyone who has come home with something so far.
My year started off crappy. My hunting buddy, my daughter, is too busy this year with getting her master's degree and work to go with me. That's ok. That's more important anyway. Then the property I've been on.... the guy was leasing. He moved. Landlord had me take my stands out 2nd week of bow season. I have a place to go but can't go opening weekend because the owner has his buddies from the city up that weekend. The rest of the season is good.... as long as his handyman is going to be there.
Opening day, I put the dog out about 4:30. That wind was whipping. I said f it and went back to bed. About 930 I finally got to use my new hitch rack.... to transport a doe for a friend of mine.
he was able to get me permission to sit on that property yesterday. Sat in the blind about 5:30 until after 4. Stopped counting squirrels by 2 PM. Other than that, didn't see a thing.
I'll have Thursday and Friday though at the horse farm with the handyman. Saturday is early T-day dinner with daughter and her bf family. Then hopefully Sunday.

Shot this 8 pointer in Orange County around 8:45 AM yesterday morning.
The rifle is chambered in 243 LBC. Weighs 8 1/2 lbs as pictured. Fixed magazine of course.

That's a monster there! Seems like morning is the best time this year. Anything seen or taken on my property has been before 9:00.
My buddy was in Franklinville for opening weekend. Said it was the worst in recent memory. I think they took one deer between half a dozen guys.
I've been hunting with an AR15 for 3 years now. The last two years with a 450 Bushmaster. I always make sure to post a picture of the deer with an AR15 laying across it on Face Book , just to prove the AR15 critics wrong.
Down here, there's no one pushing them like decades ago. My buddies and I hear very few shots opening day. The buck in the photo wasn't scared in the least. I sit on a boulder, chair height. He didn't care.

Just got back from camp and I must say it was a rather disappointing opening weekend.
I managed to get a nice doe Saturday morning at 7:30 . Had a little spike annoy me around 10 am . That was it !
The highlight of the weekend besides our traditional clam bake was my buddy had a few turkeys shit on him ! Haha While getting into his stand in the dark he knocked a bunch of turkeys off their roust . I never would’ve believed it if it wasn’t for the shit all over his jacket .
All in all it was a fun weekend but the lack of deer was a bit of a downer . Usually opening weekend we would have 4-5 hanging between the three of us . Hopefully things turn around this weekend.

my friends 14ys old boy used dads 6.5 creed AR and got a 7pt .. last night his grandpa used the same gun and got a 6pt .. kids dad is flipping back n forth with his 458socom AR and 270win bolt .. .. puttin meat in the freezer ..

243 LBC, that's a new one on me, I had to look it up. What made you choose that over the Grendel or even the 6.8? Either way, it does the job.

The last two years, I've been using my Salomon hiking boots for hunting, no insulation, feet would get cold on a day like Saturday morning.
Got my first pair of Irish Setters when I needed some steel toes for chainsawing. Expensive, but worth it. I got a killer sale, only paid like $100 for a pair that's normally $130+
Decided to look at them again for a dedicated winter/hunting boot, wanted some insulation. Stay away from the Vaprtrek's, they fall apart prematurely. Was looking at the Trail Phantom and another set, ended up going w/ the Gunflint II for about $150. They were immediately comfortable. 1000g of insulation, great treads on the bottom. Thought they'd be too clunky, but they actually weren't. Weren't heavy at all and kept my feet warm all morning. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a pair. I didn't even wear wool socks, I wore regular socks I wear every day.
Also, what I looked for over the other boots was the stitching of the sole/toe area. Some were glued, but these are definitely sewn. That got my vote. I needed these to hold up not only when I'm in the woods, but also when I'm out snowblowing. I tend to do a lot of driveways before I get any calls, so I need something to stay warm and dry and give me good traction.

Yes, it does. We made that mistake last year of transporting our deer up to NF's house after gutting them. Had to use the propane heater to warm up the garage a bit to make it work.

Thanks, I had a 243 WIn many years ago that I sadly let go. It always dropped deer in their tracks. When I read about the 243 LBC, the idea of having near 243 Win performance in an AR15 intrigued me. I was using a 90 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip @ 2900 fps out of a 22" barrel. That's pretty solid 250 Savage performance right there. I can get 2850 fps out of a 95 grain bullet but I need more load development there. Huge bullet selection with 6mm's too.
The 6.5 Grendel didn't have enough velocity for me and less sectional density than the 243 LBC. Same goes for the 6.8. Recoil is nearly non existent in the 243 LBC. I saw the deer go down through the scope when I fired.
