Had a real professional hunt Saturday morning. Got out of bed about 6:30, the wife had to drive me to pick up my drunk truck that was left at the bar Friday night, then had to make a coffee stop, then a run to the dump.. Finally started my hunt about 10:30, decided to check on a small landlocked piece of property I own. Deer sign all over, active scrapes and rubs but no deer to be had, I can usually jump them if they're bedded down so it's either cross me or jump the creek which will offer shots if I make it to creek fast enough.. But this time it was a bust.
Decided on going across the road at 11:00 , jumped in the atv and headed for my tower. But it was such a nice day I decided to head for a ladder stand and sit in the sunshine for a few hours. Parked on the seasonal road about 150 yards from the ladder, walked in real casual because deer sign has been about nill right since the owner put a outhouse near an old firepit and summer drinking spot near the stand. The stand still offers good views across a the swamp though.
Made it to the bottom of the ladder when a buck jumped less than 25 yards to my left, pulled up on him , my scope was capped, hit the red Buttler Creek switch and pulled up again,,,, forgot about the front cap. By the third attempt he was dead center away and ass flag towards me 75 yards out.. Fuck it ,he has horns just shinning in the sunlight so I launch a round at the back of his skull, No positive response so I chamber another in the Winchester model 70 compact and send another at as he hit the other side of swamp at the tree line. This time he crashes but I can see him struggling to get up and away. Made a quick climb up the ladder and saw him get up, another round sent... missed.. time to reload, he's back up and broad side so another is sent when he offers shots between the trees. I cant account for my fifth round but that's what I have into at the point he finally goes down. this all take less than a minute, then a doe jumps from the same spot, let her go and waited for the buck to die..
walked around the swamp after fifteen minutes, he died right on a atv trail,, very convenient, thankyou deer gods..
shot results are less than someone might say is good moral shooting on deer hunting, but I was confident I could take him.. My first skull shot cut his left tine nearly in half.. the shot that initially dropped him was in just forward of his rear hip, the kill shot went right in the basket though, his heart fell out with the gut job. Seems two shots went to the trees and brush.
