What about an air rifle. That is what my BIL uses around his place as other homes in the area. He has taken plenty a racoon and Ive heard using the right pellet you can maybe take a yote?!

My understanding on coyotes is any weapon, day or night. I can't recall any limits but check the DEC website.

Not a bad idea for the coon. I do have a decent break barrel.
That's my understanding as well but I'm concerned because I will likely need to hunt them down and probably need something limited range a la #4 buckshot.
Anyone bait coyotes? Wondering if I can lure them onto the property. I know it's legal. Admittedly I dont have a deer carcass handy.

my wife wont let me shoot at the coons and oppossum around our place. damn things. they come and eat the stray cats food...yes she feeds the strays that were evicted from the neighbors barn about a yr ago. Id love to know how she evicted them as they have been in our barn and around our place ever since.

Coyotes like cats a lot. They're typically easy for them to catch and kill. Sorry to say yours may be gone forever.
As far as baiting them in order to eliminate them, you can use almost anything. Dog food, table scraps, road kill, etc. Here's the thing : coyotes learn quick. If you miss one, don't expect it to come back to give you another chance. If you're in a residential neighborhood, good luck getting rid of them. They have found a food source and shelter nearby.
A pellet gun will not likely kill a coyote. They are tough critters. You would be better off with a well placed head sjot from a 22 rimfire. A 22 from a rifle late at night may be loud enough to wake a neighbor, but they won't know what woke them unless you shoot again while they are awake. Winchester and CCI both make.22 LR rounds that fragment into 3 or 4 pieces. One of these to the ear hole or between the eyes will do the trick. Don't try a shot to the vitals with a .22 rimfire. They might die, but they will run a long way first. You dont want your neighbor to find it on their front lawn and call the police, they might be smart enough to follow a blood trail.
Calling is effective to bring them in, but using the wrong sounds or volume will keep them away, and they will learn to keep a distance from your setup.

I haven’t predator hunted in 3-4 years so I may behind on the regs, my understand was you can’t field a rifle for predators during deer season if it’s a shotgun only area.

As far as legal implements, basically :
1: if ANY big game season is open, there are 2 rules. A : if it is legal to hunt big game with a rifle in that area, then you can use any rifle to hunt coyotes. B: if your area is limited to hunting big game, ( you may NOT use a rifle ), then you may hunt coyotes with a .22 RIMFIRE or smaller, or any centerfire rifle LESS THAN .22 CALIBER. THAT MEANS , .17 OR .204. Coyotes may be taken day or night, use of nightvision and thermal scopes is legal.
There are other restrictions near NYC area, but that's it in a nutshell.
Keep in mind the 500 foot rule from any occupied bldg, and 1000 feet from school.
You can whack a coyote in a residential area if you're smart about it, but DON'T GET CAUGHT !

So my area is basically semi-woods and semi-residential; I was thinking along the lines of using #4 20 gauge buckshot (or slugs).

Ive tried yote too a couple of times night and day with a call. not too hard core but I'd like to get into it. I hear them at night all around my house...all farm feilds and stuff so Ive always set up with a shotgun...
tried distress calls to try to bring them in a bit closer from where they are to were I can hunt/Yotes dont know they live where I cant hunt so...gotta come closer to me!!!!!

Cats are excellent yote bait but they also love horse meat unless it's full of antibiotics.
Yours will probably come back pregnant, it would be a tough kill for a single yote; unless it was skilled at the ole spin move I watched a farmers dog do one day.

Interestingly enough there are (or were, not sure now) a couple of horses nearby...

Thanks Tisto. I do have one, actually. My thing isn't the noise, it's that we're on a ridgeline that runs along a north/south valley that has houses downrange on the west side, so I have concerns about potential distances. I'm not even worried about walking that area or shooting on someone else's back 40, we are good like that here.
I need to get calculating about it, right now I'm emotional and stupid about so I basically want to kill anything that even looks like a predator in the hood. Not a lot of things I get like this on but I definitely loved that little bitch and I'm sure she isn't waiting in some shelter for me to come get her.
On topic of the thread - will be on the range this weekend for sure spending sometime with the slug gun dialing in for deer season, and the semi for pheasant.

Last Saturday my wife informed me that she's thinking about hunting. I about drove off the road when she told me that. She's pretty close to being a tree hugger and years ago said she'd only turkey hunt because they're ugly, and there's no way she'd ever hunt anything else.
Tomorrow morning she's going to go sit in a tree with her sister while her sister bow hunts.
It's tough to keep an even keel over this, as I find it pretty exciting that she might actually take up hunting. She did, however, inform me that there's no way she'd field dress anything, and that it would be my job to do it. Thanks honey.
