WTF are these guys?!
Black Swallowtail Butterfly. The caterpillars eat carrot greens, parsley and dill.
Yep. They stripped 3 dill plants overnight.Black Swallowtail Butterfly. The caterpillars eat carrot greens, parsley and dill.
Damn, I better keep a closer eye on all of my dill. I need it for making pickles soon.Yep. They stripped 3 dill plants overnight.
A 16’ x 50” steel wire fence panel from Tractor supply. I have one on either end of my largest raised bed box. One end is for trellising cucumbers the other end is usually for beans, but we decided to try spaghetti squash this year. I’ve been grabbing One or two the last Couple of years when they are on sale.Looks great. What did you trellis with?
Grow some sacrificial plants and keep them alive. Butterflies are on the decline hugely.WTF are these guys?!

I saw a kitchen compost bucket in a photo that you posted recently. Don’t you use any composted material for fertilizer., Or to make compost tea to water you plants? Compost is all the fertilizer that I use With really good results.Well I am finally getting some spaghetti squash so I think it was a fertilizer thing...

It’s Always good to learn something new!We do but as we got a late start this year we weren't able to mix the compost in with the soil. I do need to start making compost tea. Was a hard year to get started not least because I had to do most of it myself (I'm more the hunter / gatherer and the wife is the farmer). Been a big learning year for me.
They are destructive little bastards! I’ve been knocking them out of my apple tree with a slingshot and marbles quite a bit lately. I’ve distracted them somewhat with a platform ground feeder for them that I put unshelled peanuts on. It keeps them Busy and gives me a better opportunity to wack em good with a marble. Did I mention that I HATE tree rats?!Damn squirrels are killing me. They are now eating my black berries. They chew the entire head off at the branch and eat them all. I’m thinking of just throwing in the towel!! I can’t keep the squirrels away. My wife wants me to build some huge fence contraption but that takes the fun out of it IMO. I’m tearing down the trellis this weekend. At least make the fuckers fight for it and not give them a perch to eat it right in front of my backdoor.
Pock the first one. Looks ready to me. You need to harvest before it flowers.Ok broccoli’s looking good. How do I know when to pick it?
I wish. I live in the damn city or I’d just shoot them all year round. I was with a pellet gun but my wife kept giving me shit so I stopped. She’s right. The neighbors had a Bernie Sanders sign and would likely blow me in!!They are destructive little bastards! @Calculon - these need a bit of work before planting but these are on tap for probably weekend / early next week in terms of burying ginger. Only needs a little bit of soil over it to start. Wife places saran wrap over the planter for a couple weeks (second pic is current growth on what I posted the other day).

Thanks. Do you start it just by putting it in the window?
