300 blackout for deer?

The Ham'r would be interesting if I didn't already have a 30 Herrett (TAC 30). The TAC 30 is strictly wildcat though - a fairly easy one, but still, you need to make every round.

Ham'r looks like a long 300 BO tailored to short bullets. TAC 30 is very similar but based on the 6.8 case so it gets a little more. The biggest issue with both is that the usable bullets aren't very aerodynamic. They start out with better numbers than the others but fall behind quickly. Still, the Ham'r seems to fit your intended use well and it's much better than the BO.

Cheapest ammo I saw on Wilson's site was $17.95. I haven't found it anywhere else but since it's a WC creation, that doesn't surprise me. Shipping to an FFL or through an out-of-state friend might be your only real options.

Too much stuff to read through here, but to answer the O.P.’s question, YES. I took three deer last year with .300 blk. One shot each, first one went down 10 yards from where it was it at, about a 70 yard shot in dark pines. Next one was an 80 yard shot with deer on a run, went down after about 60 yards. Last on was a 40 yard shot, dropped where it stood.

So for some reason I missed out on all these new replies.

So I have my 16" fixed mag AR in 300blk (Barnes 110gr tac-tx) almost ready to go just need to sight in the red dot ......

But like I'm prone to do I called an audible and am now setting up my Saiga 7.62x39 (trying to get my hands on Federal Fusion 123gr) just ordered a sling and my QD mounts and need to order my "featureless" stock. Also with red dot.


Current set up pictures, saiga has a "claw" type grip that is horrible imho, second picture is of a vepr with the stock I'm ordering off the facebook page that makes the stock..

Don't know. I do know that an 180 gr hard cast .357 does about 1300 to 1400 fps depending on the barrel size of the revolver if loaded hot like by Underwood or Buffalo Bore for example. Otherwise they are downloaded to about 1100 fps by everyone else.

A 9mm 147 gr hard cast will go about the same 1300 to 1400 fps if loaded hot as well from a 16 inch barrel.

The deer wouldn't know the difference. Both would be the same diameter and both would provide complete pass through.

That is more momentum and specially more wounding than the rather anemic 300 barak obama.
A 180gr ftx or hardcast will hoover between 1800-1900 fps that is a lot more effective for hunting in the woods at the
typical range specially heavier animals. But really no matter what you hunt. The 35 bore is known for massive wounding just like
the 375 - 45 bores.
The 35 gunner will propel a 200gr ftx to 2400fps if needed that is more momentum and killing potential than the mighty 308 winchester
from the same barrel size, this way making it a very compact and deadly combination for the northern woods.

Also, for a an easy AR15 solution solution from a short pistol or carbine barrel the power of the 6.8spc is hard to beat.

The whole point of 35 calibers and above (most pistols) is that one now has the luxury to use lower striking speeds in exchange
for increased section that contributes to massive wounding, including flat points.

Ballistics involves everything yet values at the muzzle are rarely useful. They are just a reference but say little about the effectiveness
of a bore and/or round.

I was just picking on 9mm will. I don’t think the 9mm is a good tool for killing deer. I do like Barnes cooper when I used to take a revolver into the woods though.

The 9mm, like most of the popular pistol calibers is designed for defensive pistol primarily and for increased firepower.(many rounds).
Any of them do not leave much room for error and that is why people do not use them unless is a survival situation.
Of course it can kill the deer like most calibers including the 22 Long rifle but because it can kill it it doesn't mean
we should use it, even if legal to use.

We should look for calibers that kill fast with one well placed shot. It is the humane thing to do.

Make sure you get a pistol length gas system for the 300 BLK it is way more reliable than the carbine length system.

Rock on man. Both are fantastic choices, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I can’t wait to see you update this thread in November with your results. I’ll make sure to keep using my 5.56 on deer just so I can watch people’s head explode on the nygunforum!

The 357 has an advantage with 147gr and above bullets.
Killing a deer with a 357 revolver as well as any 9mm revolver, pistol or carbine is not the ideal.
The section compensates for the reduction of impact speed and shock there is a limit to that and that is why I suggested the 357 carbine
as a minimum and while the blackout is also marginal.

Unless there is a satisfaction or compensation that we don't know of for choosing not to use extra killing power, it doesn't make
a lot of sense. There are plenty of inexpensive good killers to carry even if it is bought just for the purpose of hunting.

I am talking about ethical hunting here, and based on its directives and philosophy.

No one is saying that some calibers aren't better than others. A .454 Casull is better than a .44 mag but the .44 does the job too. What I'm saying is that some calibers do the job as evidenced in countless hunts.

As far as ethical hunting goes, why use a .6.8 instead of a .308? Why go bow hunting? Why trap which isn't ethical in the slightest bit? Why go handgun hunting?

Aiming at the smaller target is not always humane. 9mm’s suck for deer will. The only thing worse is the .9mm
