Except they aren’t the same because the Super is a real caliber. Defensive ammo is made for it and it’s a fielded caliber in other countries.

If you were to compare the Major to the Dillon and say that they are the same, that would be correct since they are both used mostly for competition and neither is a fielded caliber.

Yes the .38 super was saami speced so commercially produced and even has some defensive loads. But again the only thing driving the market for the super is competition use just like the only thing 9mm major is looked at for is competion use.

Please tell me what countries are using .38 super as their military or major police caliber, actually I couldnt give two fucks because even if there are some it's not nearly enough to keep the caliber relivent.

Just because in the early 1900s the super had some success outside of competition doesnt mean that the main use keeping it relevant today is competition.

9 major was made up by guys who were OK with their guns blowing up if it gave them a better chance of winning a match.

The 38 super, 9x23 win, 9x21 and the 356TS&W were the answer to the 9mm not being allowed to compete in the Major PF class. pretty much all but the 38 super have died out.

IMHO the 9mm major is still a problematic round because of the pressure it takes to make major. But to each their own. I still have a couple of supers and can get ammo in one of the LGS in my area.

I'm not saying 9mm isnt cool, or is dumb, all I'm saying is it's a niche round with one purpose, and that was some guys wanted to game the system when rules for Major PF was just bullet weight and speed, so they could jam more rounds into a magazines meaning less reloads on a stage and still get those 2 extra points on non A zone hits.

Eventually the rules committee decided that specific divisions can only be .40 or .45 caliber bullets trying to keep them fair across the board.

Now the only people that consider 9mm major are those that are shooting Limited division and Open division.


(Edit, the original 9mm major and .38super, and even another round specifically designed by S&W was guys found a way to compete in .45acp specific divisions, where at the time the only .45acp guns were all pretty much single stack guns with 7-9 rounds and they figured with 9mm major hey I can get a huge advantage with my times by having double the capacity This all being IPSC......

Its not more popular because its the same size as regular 9mm, but its got enough pressure to blow up most of the 9mm guns built over the last 100 or so years.

Its the same reason they made .357 cases longer than .38 Spl.
