An attempt (10/22 target shooting)

I’ll put this embarrassing attempt here as a future reference.

Shot offhand at 25yards after a few shots off the bench to check if my sights are near where I want it to be. I would say I tried to zero my 10/22 but I understand one can only zero as good as one can shoot and...you can see for yourselves.hahaha

A couple of observations: It’s not easy to unlearn focusing on the target (in archery) instead of the front sight and it’s not easy to relax in the excitement of shooting.

It happens. Slow down, get a solid rest on a bench, and then you'll be able to see where it is shooting. Then you can see what you're working with.

Yeah, they don't look horrible to me either.

@toxophilite, try putting fewer groups per target so its easier for you discern what shot went into which group. Printing small groups offhand is difficult, stability is key. A sling can help you lock in better.

fewer groups per target, gotcha. Next time, I’ll use the back side of the paper and try drill 1 sticky w/ enough rest in between reloads. Load 5 per mag so I won’t be tempted..

Agreed with the above across the board.

Have you tried using a sling and shooting from the knee? You'll get better stability. Prone even better if you can swing it.

Practice makes perfect. Unless you're reinforcing bad habits, lol.

So far, I only have access to a couple of indoor ranges and I don’t they’d let me try alternate shooting positions...but I’ve never asked.

If I'm sighting in, I usually will take 3 - 5 shots and make my adjustment based on the average of the group, not individual shots. Those stick on targets you're using are great for that. You can take your shots at a nice clean target, make your adjustments, then prove them out on another nice clean target without having to go down range.

Some days though, I just know I'm not on my game. On those days, I won't bother making adjustments, and will just blast away for fun.

So far, I only have access to a couple of indoor ranges and I don’t they’d let me try alternate shooting positions...but I’ve never asked.

I don't think I'd shoot prone or seated at an indoor range. Usually there are a lot more contaminates on the floor at an indoor range.

Regular ol GI web sling is what they recommend:

As is the 10/22 for the recommended rifle.

Indoor ranges you are pretty limited as to shooting positions. At Appleseed they will teach you prone, kneeling and sitting. Good, practical fundamentals.

Might not be you. 10/22’s don’t have legendary accuracy from the factory. If it’s a new rifle you might have to lead up the barrel a little to tighten up the groups. What ammo did you use? Makes a huge difference in accuracy. If you haven’t already try as many brands/types of ammo as you can till you find the one the rifle likes.

@toxophilite you have gotten some good advice above!

And Appleseed will help you a lot!! Now as @GUNSICK mentions ammo is a big issue, A 10/22 will shoot about anything but some more accurate then others! for best results I would recommend CCI ( Mini Mags good, Standard Velocity better!!)

Now as @Podmonkey said a GI sling will help you big time you can get one off the Appleseed store. (And should have it for the AS shoot!)

Some other thing you will need!
A mat (A mover's blanket would work great and they are cheap!)
Soft elbow and knee pads! (hard one's NO as they will roll, ask me how I know!)
And 4 magazines or more! (I know the AS site says 2 but trust me you will need 4 or more if the Shoot Boss does Rapid Fire AQT's (40rds in 4 min's)

I second @nortatoga's ammo advice. CCI Mini Mags are all I usually buy.
Also, it's a "high velocity" loading but I have had good luck with-


The "AR Tactical" part is a marketing thing, no reason you can't use them in any .22, however for some reason the velocities on this load are more consistent than the Mini Mags. This will give you better accuracy. And they are no more expensive than the Mini Mags.

The best way to improve is to get yourself into organized shooting sports. Many gun clubs hold matches which you can attend without being a member. There are always people there who are willing to help a beginner with learning the basics. I shot my first match with Ruger 10/22 twenty two years ago. Look for a smallbore league or individual matches in your area. The most difficult part in this is the travel, unless you find something close by.

From your last paragraph it appears you have some marksmanship experience. Offhand is the hardest position to shoot. Depending an the size of the bulls in that picture you posted, you didn't do too bad

Shooting positions are very individual, but there are positions that serve as a good starting point, from there each shooter develops his own as he progresses. Also there are common mistakes, which are easy to spot by experienced shooters.

I think the groups are pretty good, assuming that the red and white target was a used one! Off hand can be very difficult, I've noticed that as I get older I'm all over the place depending on blood sugar level and caffeine and even if I'm hungry!

The Youtube screen grabs show what I try to emulate, although with a slight “wing” because of the 10/22’s grip. I did try the biathlon style stance but I struggle w/ he support hand grip: I’m on my fingertips and I still crane my neck down to get good sight alignment.

Ammo: Fiocchi high velocity was the only one available at one range but I’m pretty sure they had CCIs at the other one. Thank you for all the ammo suggestions.

@Mosinitis Marksmanship experience? Trying to talking the talk, purely faking it til I make it hahaha.

But a lot of things cross over from archery: attention to postural details and consistency.
