Leaf lettuce is the most productive thing I have grown. You wouldn't want to eat it 3 meals a day, but it can be grown most of the year, grows fast, and just a few plants of several different varieties can provide more lettuce than you would care to eat if you only harvest individual leaves as needed.

Potatoes are also one of my favorite things to grow.

When I finally buy a property, the first year goals are well/water hookup, large greenhouse, and start getting things in the ground that take a few years to bear anything.

For sure. Have a generator, installed a Reliance transfer switch years ago, and keep 110 gallons of stabilized fuel in two 55 gallon drums to run it.

My plan is a battery bank and solar panels.

But I live in AZ. I should be able to reliably run the freezer, fridge, microwave, computers, and even the AC for about 5-10 years in a power outage. After that the batteries will degrade, and I'll probably only be able to run all of that during the day.


If the power is out for 5 years,hopefully I'll have made other arrangements before the batteries give up the ghost.

Folks the list is endless... Situations are endless.. I would say if one lived in an apartment complex or even in a division with a HOA you would be limited. One's survival .. limited .... I read years ago to have a sustainable woodlot one would need 10 acres of mature timber. that is per household .Possibility that 4 acres of tillable land for food. .. to sustain ones family. To manage all that one should have a tractor. Diesel would be best. Mine was built in the early 60's an EMP would not phase it . As long as I can roll it down the hill it will run. -Being old that means repairs . I blew a tube a few weeks ago. These tires are loaded and was told I should have new rims in the future. 1500 was the bill .(to replace the the rims and tube ) I am short of that kind of money . This is an example of what things one runs into for upkeep. . About 4 years ago had the engine rebuilt ... that was close to 7 grand.
Then one needs plows and fitting equipment. and everything connected with raising crops . If one cannot get their chainsaw to run .. is the backup an axe and crosscut saw.?... Do you even have a file to keep them sharp ?. I had a Grandfather that would turn his garden over in the spring with a shovel.
The other grandfather plowed it with a team of horses. .. This is so foreign to us in the cellphone age. Then there is Canning supplies , Do you have a pressure canner ? At times it seems endless and mind boggling.To prepare to live in a different world .from what we know today.

Take this with a grain of salt, but the germination rate of most items drops quite rapidly with age so unless you review the contents of the vaults and possibly rotate them out every couple of years, they may not be of much use.

I had an older one of the vault types things and i broke it open to plant and some stuff did ok, and others not so much.

I've had great luck freezing certain types. I just pulled a frozen seed stash that was 10 years old. Had 99% germination rate.

I keep my seeds in an airtight container with some desiccant packets thrown in just in case. But if you're keeping your seeds in a dry area to begin with you probably don't need to take that extra step.

What you do need to do is protect your seeds from mice/squirrels/rodents. I've lost a couple hundred dollars of seed to them before. Plastic won't cut it.

FWIW, grabbed a 20lb case of columbian roast beans from RD. just pantry stuff. Then fired up the freeze drier to put in some leftover chicken and pork. Hit Sams club also and found some frozen huevos rancheros that were on a great sale. Those will end up in the freeze drier as well.

Yea I mentioned this in another thread- now is the time to buy ammo if you need it. I doubt things are going to drop any further than they are now, and it really feels like something destabilizing is coming. Biden ordering everyone to be vaccinated seems very possible and that could be the trigger.

Folks years ago one could go to a LDS (Mormon )Canneries and can food . It was a low cost deal where one could work 4-5 hours at the cannery and they could can food (their own ) at a reduced rate. They used metal cans Sounds like the government stepped in and closed a process that had worked well over 100 years.
The canneries are still in business They sell wheat, dried beans,flour and the like , One is outside of Manchester NY.

You can make normal liquid chlorinator out of it if you want for everyday use, but the dry is more than 10x as space efficient and far more shelf stable.

I would store it in the same place I store other pool chemicals.

The thing is, that's not even an abnormal amount to store for a normal pool owner. A large pool in a bad location might take 2 packages a couple times a year. That whole case could be just a 2 year supply.

But if you're purifying drinking water instead of swimming water, then it's a shitload and will last essentially forever.

But, you are correct, don't store it with your beans and rice, and keep it away from hydrocarbons and metals.

Me and the wife have shored up our short term preps and are now looking to advance to some more long term food storage. I have watched a few videos and read a few things about storing rice, flour and beans in sealed up 5 gallon pails. Is this a good start to some longer preps? Basically what I have gathered is take food grade 5 gallon bucket put silicone in the lid seal and throw in a hand warmer to eat the oxygen. Is that all there is to it? Also we aren't big bean people is there a resource for cooking them i.e. cook book or website recommendations?
