AR Platform, Something Else Or Nothing?

Never got a good vibe at Civil. They're right by us, but I went there one day with $1000 to buy ammo and even though they had no one in the store, they still wouldnt let us in without an appointment. I guess they didn't need our money.

Sorry to hear that. Civil has been really good to me over the years. During the protests in Albany they rented buses for their customers and we all would go together. They even rented the roof of a building in view of the rally and had a customer who did film production film the event, edit it and put it online to counter the pathetic coverage from the media. I asked Derek why they are doing appointments. He said if they just opened now like prior to the scamdemic they would sell out of everything very quickly and they can't replace stuff because of the BS and supply chain issues. This way they can spread things out and try to give everyone a chance to get what they need which although is a PITA is why they limit the amount of ammo you can buy. Blame the scamdemic and idiots who put up with this shit instead of the store owners. It also avoids too many people being in there at once during this scamdemic BS. Other stores you have to stand outside and wait on line until a certain amount of people leave before you can go in so you can wait a while. I guess in this climate I can see appointments are easier in some ways and you don't have to stand around waiting. It isn't for everyone though.

Yeap and everybody got their panties in a bunch saying they were still illegal and no stores would carry them blah blahblahblah...... and yet,...... here we are. I have had a DLD for about three years now, and it's been cleaned TWICE, and still functions like a sewing machine. Love it. The wife just bought herself a second one for the hell of it.

Well, I left there, and went to Quattros and found 1000 rounds of S&B 9mm for $300 and another 500 rounds or Remington 9mm for $170. They had no issue taking my money/business. This was when other local shops were selling 1000 rounds of 9mm for $499.

The FRS15 alternative stock gives people the option to have a 100% functional and accurate AR and one can swap rifle uppers and calibers as needed.
The stock has Zero impact on the rifles accuracy and reliability.
We used them a few times in 3 gun and long range and never saw a quantifiable drawback.
Cosmetics do not matter on a fight and Ergonomics are pretty subjective. Many folks with large hands will find AR mil spec grips quite ackward due to the lack of support for the trigger finger.
Bottom line, whether one uses a mini 14, an ak with a classic plastic grip or a wood thumbhole, or a cetme or ar with a classic grip or afternarket stock,
the most important thing is to shoot a lot and get good with the gun, ammo and tactics.
Professinal Training and reperition is far more important than equipment. Any equipment changes will be discovered during training and not by long long threads and arbitrary perceptions.
The only "ugliness" one should be worry about is how ugly is going to be the battle and damage one is going to bring to the enemy.
If you can, at the range ask around and see if you can try some of the guns and rounds you are considering. In the ranges I go people are pretty open and friendly and willing to assist beginners and others given a good predisposition.
There is nothing like 1st hand testing to have a good idea of what to expect.
I realize not always possible for everyone but ask around, you might be surprised.

Agreed. If though I can find one that works well AND I don't mind looking at that's a win win in my book.

Added Troy iron sights. Will be adding a Magpul sling and most likely a light. Oh yeah, bought 300 rounds of Aguila green tip 5.56.

I've had great luck with troy's. I know their political affiliations are questionable at best, but the sights ju st work.


Most of mine were pretty much zeroed out of the box too. They must be pretty precisely made to be like that.

OAL cannot be less than 26". That puts you at a minimum barrel length of 11"-12" depending on upper and buffer set up. You can go longer if you want.

My 12" barrel with SBA3 brace puts mine at 26½" with the brace at it's shortest

Prices are going crazy right now. I bought a Savage MSR Recon last year for $830.00 with a NY legal pinned magazine. I didn't think building one was the way to go for a first time AR owner and $830 seemed like a fair price. The only problem is that after I added the optic, the scope mount, the bi-pod, the sling, the case, the initial boxes of ammo, the light, the angled foregrip, the backup offset iron sights, and the Bear Defense BF-1 speed loaders I was at $1,500.00. lol

Oh honey, wait till you have 4 or five or more.

Just my .223 bolt gun has a $400 optic, $100 base, and $120 rings. That adds up to more than I paid for the rifle itself.

My .308 bolt gun has a $700 optic.

It only gets worse with time.

Just like I did with my pistol, I plan on taking courses on rifle shooting. Until then I will just shoot it with my sons. They are very adept at this platform. First though I have to have the tools and accessories I will need to do things right.
