Best option/mag lock or spur & ny triggerguards ?

If so, you feel it’s “over gassed”? If DD, what’s the dimensions on:

• Gas Journal?
• Gas Port?
• Distance from the shoulder to the gas port?

Reason I ask is because I’ve heard there’s some variance between individual DD of the same model.

Lancer mag? If so, how’s it treating you? I’ve heard mixed reviews. I personally run Magpul, GI, etc (Have used other brands, found those to be solid)

That is the NYGF group buy receiver build that @Eddie Gunks put together for me, I just swapped tge magpul furniture that was originally on it to my other AR which is the Daniel Defense.
As to the gas port and journals ect. Everything is to milspec now and has been for a while, they used to overgas tge rifles for reliability it the past but not for some years now, all the parameters you mentioned are to the TDP specs. This is coming from Daniel Defense itself in an email. It doesn't have a harsher impulse than is typical so I am inclined to believe them. DD rifles are excellent, I have had no issues with my current one and the two small issues I had with the previous one, a loose handguard and finish wear were both addressed to beyond my expectations.
The red dot is a DI Optical FC1. I don't recommend it, the UI is clunk and the brightness levels are wonky and the dot is a bit blurry. I am looking to replace it with a Holosun 515gm.
The Lancer mags are fine though I don't think they are really worth twice the price of a Magpul magazine and the Lancers have given me feeding issues when loaded with stripper clips and tge USGI guide. When using the StipLula clip loader I have had no issues however. I'd say at around $30 they are the preferable magazine to buy.

I am also a fan of the Fightlite SCR. I tried the Thordsen and the spur but didn't like it. I took a class where some people had fixed mags and when they jammed it is a pita. I built it as an option for my son to shoot with me, and for when I retire from LE, but I think it is the best option available right now. Just costs a few bucks.

I have a full featured fixed mag setup. I use the Prince 50 lock. It's like a standard mag release but has a set screw in the middle that when tightened doesn't allow the button to depress. You can install it with or without the spring. I did it without the spring so that if you take the set screw out and eject the mag, it will still not "accept" a new mag. This can be converted back to function like a regular mag release within 1 minute. Also it was very cheap.

The BF10 loaders are high quality and work very well. I can reload extremely fast. Get a bunch and load them up like you would spare mags. They will fit right into any AR mag holders. The key to them working perfectly it to pair them with the Lancer brand magazines. This is recommended by the company and I can verify they work perfect together.

That's what I used. They didn't have any with the holes so I ground the spikes off. I put a tac on it with a mig so a bit more permanent than epoxy. My AR is only used for hunting so it works for it's intended purpose. P-Mag base comes off easy to unload or clear jams. Only had one jam and it wasn't fault of the rifle.

Of course, the law makes no mention of anything being permanent.

What sucks is without going fixed mag or featureless there aren’t many semi auto center fire rifles you can own in NY. Neither option is ideal for me, though thordsen gen 3s are functionally the same as a pistol gripped AR.

You haven’t had the dreaded double feed yet where the bolt gets stuck and and 2 rounds are stuck in the chamber jammed above the feed lips where you need a screwdriver to extract them no matter if you remove the guts from the bottom of the magazine.

Thanks, guys for the heads up and info on your experience with "fixed" mag ARs. Yes, I know its not the perfect setup but like I stated with training/practice you will/can become very efficient with what you have and that is where I'm headed. I have another lower just hangin around so maybe I will try another one that is featureless,, time will tell and after working with and shooting my fixed mag rifle for awhile I'll just see I guess. The Fightlite SCR looks promising but hell why not spend a couple hundred more and just get a Mini-14, LOL it probably would be cheaper in the long run. I know the Mini's have there own set of issues but I have never known one not to run,, it always been an accuracy thing with them but I do think the new ones are better, I guess that's always an option.
And lastly, I have never heard or seen so many people talk about the dreaded "double feed" . I think it's been mentioned a half dozen times in this thread !! Yes, I know it can happen,, but back in the day when I had ARs and took multiple classes, ran 3gun and just normal fun matches I think the only double-feed I have had was in the Classes I took and they were self-induced so students could learn how to clear them! You guys mention it like it happens 2 or 3 times a mag,, LOL I would say if your runnin crap mags/weak springs or a lower-tier rifle it could happen more but I guess its just something I haven't dealt with very much! True, and also the main reason I don't epoxy the mag lock. Personally, I don't worry much about it. A jam can happen on anything and you'd be just as screwed, unless you're carrying extra mags with you while you were doing a sweep of your house. I know I wouldn't be after being awoken middle of night. If I heard something while I was sleeping, I'm sure I'd just grab pistol and go.

• Unfortunately, because of government fiat, we’re forced to make sub optimal calculations when deciding what tools to use & how to set them up.

• Yes, the chances of a “double feed” occurring, statistically speaking, is not likely to happen frequently (assuming one is using quality gear).

• However, I’ve seen in person (at the range), a malfunction occur to an individual with a fixed mag AR, that he could not remedy then and there, and it forced him to use the rest of his range time on the “pistol side”.

• I have seen demonstrated in person, & watched a video with a timer, a reload done with a ejection port loader, that approximated on a “standard” mag change.

• It seems with training, that it can be done with almost the same speed!

• The forced change in the manual of arms, can be habituated to the point of proficiency!

• None the less, for me, ergonomics & use of enablers aside, mitigating the risk of not being able to better address a malfunction, in the statistically uncommon occurrence that I would have to employ a ballistic solution when presented with a lethal threat overrides other considerations!

• With all trade offs being considered, I want the ability to remove the mag and have better clearance through the mag well in order to deal with a malfunction!

• One should definitely have additional mags (or ejection port loaders) at the ready, with their HD kit, for if & when a lethal threat presents itself and you can grab said HD “kit”. (Especially given the BS of 7 rounds in 10 round mag)

• There are options (with certain assumed risks), that can be used to establish an attempt at compliance, that give you the best of ”all” worlds: functionality, ergonomics, use of enablers & of least importance (or for some most) aesthetics!

7 round law in NY is dead. (Although I do think I recall hearing of one county saying they were going to enforce it anyways.)

Can this be elaborated on? Not to derail the thread, but I hear a lot of conflicting information. Per the SAFE Act webpage (last I checked) it’s claimed to still be in effect.

Even while hunting it isn’t ideal. When you have to unload to pack up and go home, you either have to chamber and extract every single round and put a dimple in the primer or pop open the magazine from the bottom and pull the guts out. All that could be avoided with a Thordsen but some cannot get past the looks so they will handicap themselves further than what the law says that they have to for looks.

And no matter what anyone says regarding those mag loaders, you have to do them perfectly for them to work properly. They require finer motor skills compared to a regular magazine reload. People fumble regular magazine reload under fire and stress.

I think it's ok but too short for my likings. If they made the gen 2 a touch longer and made a extended buffer tube cover I would be good with that. Still find the fixed mag a lot more comfortable but more of a pain in the ass if anything goes wrong or if you have to unload it.

AR15s can actually spontaneously generate. That is a scientific fact that cannot be disputed, ever! That being the case, why not have:

• Fixed mag, which gives you the ability to utilize enablers: VFG, barricade stops, various muzzle devices, more versatile stock options, etc

• Thordsen: more or less same ergonomics as a “pistol” grip, a solid cheek weld, the ability to utilize the ammunition feeding devices that this platform was designed to take, etc

• Sparrow Grip: may put your hand at a awkward angle (variables depending), you’ll need a ambi safety (or at least highly recommend), but you can have a standard fixed stock (that utilizes the energy from the controlled explosion after the firearm was discharged, in a way that the platform was originally intended to use), detach

• There are other options that can be used to establish an attempt at compliance (but going into all of them might derail the thread)

Speaking of derailing this thread, can anyone provide well vetted information about if 7 rounds in 10 still stands, from what I understand it does? (Should I go back, edit and delete this last part?)

7 in a ten round magazine was ruled unconstitutional by Judge Skretney in the appeals court of Western NY. It then was reaffirmed by the 2nd Circuit Appeals Court which is the highest court before the Supreme Court to also be unconstitutional. It now applies to the entirety of NY, CT, and VT.

NYS has not updated Penal Law 265 yet to reflect it because confusion creates compliance to a nonexistent law that could no longer be enforced.

It doesn't put me in pain but it does effect my shooting and it's quite uncomfortable. I don't even get a positive feeling grip on a conventional stock because the grip angle is much different than a pistol grip. I had a 6.5 Swed that was absolutely terrible to hold, sent it down the road after 6 months. That's why when I got my PP I immediately started hunting with them. Even small game I'd hunt with .22 handguns.
I though we discussed this before, maybe not.
