As it turns out, SVB was a massive donor to Black Lives Matter and other social justice causes, to the tune of nearly $74 million dollars. $73,450,000 to be more exact.
The figure comes from an extensive report dropped by the Claremont Institute on Tuesday. The report details $82 billion dollars in social justice/BLM investments by major American companies. SVB stands out as one of the larger donors, next to big donors like Apple ($100 million) and Comcast ($165 million). While at the top of the donation pool, those contributors do pale in comparison to donors like Blackrock ($810 million) and Citigroup ($1.1 billion). However, the group did pledge on their website to provide in total up to $11 billion dollars by 2026 for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and racial justice causes.

Must be my lack of financial understanding, but I always believed that an "investment" was giving money to a person or corporation with the expectation that I would receive more money than I gave back from them.

In the end, it's all Monopoly money anyway but, so I've heard, the bills that come with the board game are at par with fUSA "Bogus Bucks".
They should have used that money to hedge their interest rate risk on their long term Treasury portfolio. One thing I haven't read in all the articles is any talk of any effort to make offsetting investments to balance their risk. This is banking 101 and has been practiced for 40 years. I know because I used to work for a bank 25 years ago. Holding a large group of long term securities without hedging the risk is criminal mismanagement.

I still think there’s a few more to go down and maybe more depending on what the feds do with the interest rate. The fed reserve and the Biden admin are in a huge pickle right now… bad times ahead for sure.

The Fed is between a rock and a hard place now. If they continue to raise rates to fight inflation then they risk ruining the banking system. Many if not most banks have significant Treasury bond positions. If they stop raising rates to save the banking system then inflation will continue.
Given the track record of the fed and general incompetence of government the safe bet is the destruction of the banking system AND runaway inflation. Good times....

Its my view that this may not be criminal mismanagement in the sense that I believe you are implying (i.e., simple fiduciary negligence by corporate officers trying to hide losses incurred on bad investment choices the bank made), but that SVB was essentially a front, given the players involved in both its executive management and its board, and its list of investors, its ties to other corporations, its corporate sponsorship of organized criminals like BLM, its connections to the Clintons and the Obamanation, the questionable wheeling and dealing with tech startups (reminiscent in a way of the DotCom Bubble of yesteryear), and so on.
It appears to me, the more I read, that we're looking at "a tangled web practiced to deceive."
In other words, just an extension of the Bankster movement that took over in 1913.
