However long it takes me to walk out to the line to rehang targets and to reload mags. The barrel of that Daniel Defense AR is little affected by heat. It may not be a match barrel but it has proven to be extremely resistant and tolerant of hard use.
If I take my time I can from the bench, off hand not a chance. I usually shoot a sighter/ fouling shot (gong or a zero target) before I go for score. I do a lot better when I load one round at a time. If I shoot a mag full my targets suffer (doesn't matter if I am shooting a bolt or a semi), my groups open up because I get in a hurry to squeeze the trigger.
When shooting the match targets, i.e. 10 round strings, the barrel never gets hot enough to cause discomfort. When I shoot multiple 30 round strings however, as in double tap or transition drills the barrel will get so hot I can't even hang onto the handguard. I only have the one AR though, the Garand is still under maintenance and too expensive to shoot and the SKS is not very well suited for our matches.
You need to get into reloading for the Garand. I load 135 grain sierras over 47.5 grains of IMR 4895 for a sweet shooter that is good enough to hold the 9 ring at my clubs military shoots at 100 and 200 yards. We shoot 10 rounds sitting, 10 rounds off hand at each distance. Which is where I got the nick name Machine Gun. I am usually done shooting both my rifles at each distance before the others are done with one rifle. I am sure if I slowed down a bit my 170s would turn into 190s but, where would the fun be in that?
I believe that's just the style of target he'll be using.
@Exonautic is right, the targets will be in the "style" of the 200 yard target, there wont be any animals, food or creatures or special things that have to be shot, just a simple bullseye target style to shoot and score.
