You're going to have to start recruiting some more females, 'cause I'm having no part of that.
Not enough room in his mom's basement.Or you could get yourself a girlfriend already.
Did you just assume my sexuality!?
I'm offended!![]()
*sexyWell, since I met you I'm going out on a limb and saying you're either a man, or you're one of the most homely women I've ever laid eyes on.

I am not arguing against a certain amount of PMs, I am just saying all things are not certain in life. PMs will always be a way to preserve wealth on the back side of things when paper is worthless but, there will be times that PMs are as worthless as paper money when it comes to trading. I just wouldn't put a lot into PMs until everything else has been covered (Food, water, fuel, and defense).Maybe, maybe not. Its been my observation that there are always those that will bet on gold in any circumstance, it may be a matter of timing like you illustrate but I guarantee they are out there. My gold is in the form of jewelry, and in that form might even be considered useful in day to day living, for my wife anyway. I also have a scale and nippers.
I guess I don't understand arguments against having an amount of gold or silver at hand, it is a survival tool no different than ammo or food.

Precious MetalsThere as many scenario's as the combined imaginations of all members will allow. What is a PM, other than Post Meridian?

No one said they couldn't however, I would not find it wise to spend 1200 on an ounce of gold if you didn't have 6 months of food for the family already saved up. If you have the funds to put 1200 on an ounce of gold and have enough to meet your basic prepping needs while doing it more power to you.Why can't all that prep work be done simultaneously on an ongoing basis? Purchasing precious metals is no different than investing in stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc, where dollar cost averaging is the prudent way to invest.
On the other hand, passing on this weeks 12 pack of beer and buying an ounce of silver once in a while might not be a bad idea.No one said they couldn't however, I would not find it wise to spend 1200 on an ounce of gold if you didn't have 6 months of food for the family already saved up. if you have rotten food you are doing it wrong. If thirty years go by with no apocalypse, though, you will be much happier knowing that have a bunch of gold rather than a bunch of rotten food.
Are you a dentist? Are you a doctor? There are things you won't have (or be able to do) if things go south. No matter how prepared you are. To think otherwise is a common misconception (the myth of independence). If you need a tooth pulled NOW and the only dentist for miles has all the food, tools, and ammo they want then what will you trade with? This is a case where gold/silver will prove to be helpful. If you need something and the seller is not interested in what you have to offer then gold/silver will be a likely means of exchange. If you don't have gold/silver then you will need to find a third party that does have something the seller wants (and the third party must need something you have).
You certainly do not need to put all of your wealth into physical gold/silver. The usual advice is to keep 6 months living expenses in cash. Same advice might be prudent with gold/silver. It is not about preserving wealth, it is about hedging. Which is precisely the same reason to keep ammo, tools, and food. I agree that if you do not have enough food, firewood, etc to see you through winter then wait on getting physical gold/silver. But if you could weather winter as it stands then gold/silver might be prudent.
Another big advantage to gold is just how compact it is. How else could you effectively conceal $20,000 on your person (e.g. hidden inside the soles of your boots) and still have something easily traded?
Very good! Booze and weed too I'd imagine. Can't remember where I read it, but cigarettes are good currency.

Not so fast bigot:Not that this applies so much to the folks here, but feminine supplies. Hey, maybe it would apply. If you're a girl, how much would a guy gain if he had some supplies for you? Haha.
“There are a lot of people who have never considered what it’s like to get your period while not identifying as a woman". Uh, since no one generally knows if you have your period, I'd say it's pretty much the same.
You be better off investing your money in food, tools, and ammo that you can actually use for all those long years where an organized society is no more.
--------------
It's a waste of money if you ask me that could be put into supplies that you'll actually need to survive. You shouldn't be looking for gold to buy things when things go south. You should already have them.
100%Using your theory about what to acquire for a SHTF scenario, why not just use all your allotted resources to buy ONLY ammo, or ONLY food, or ONLY water, or ONLY toilet paper, etc?
If you're spreading your financial preparatory resources across all the above items then why wouldn't you also acquire some resources, ie: gold/silver, to round out your bartering capabilities? Don't pigeonhole yourself into only the items you personally think are the most valuable. If you believe that, then maybe you should ONLY prep with toilet paper.
No. I would buy more things that I'll need now. Why buy them later?Using your theory about what to acquire for a SHTF scenario, why not just use all your allotted resources to buy ONLY ammo, or ONLY food, or ONLY water, or ONLY toilet paper, etc?

And you think that the starving dentist that can pull your tooth would rather have the gold acid tabs you pictured above or a case of MRE's? Or perhaps a box of 9mm for the empty gun he has?Are you a dentist? Are you a doctor? There are things you won't have (or be able to do) if things go south. No matter how prepared you are. You certainly do not need to put all of your wealth into physical gold/silver (false dichotomy <sigh>). The usual advice is to keep 6 months living expenses in cash. If you have a survivable gunshot wound and the doctor has everything he needs you may be VERY happy you bought that CombiBar.
Each tiny chip is exactly 1 gram of 24k gold worth about $40 presently. The entire card is about $2,000.
