See, you can be crazy, but like a fox. A rabid fox. If you are real good and stealthy you might make the surviors think the neighbourhood is haunted and everyone else bugs out.

I read a story once . The author was one of the greatest cattle geneticist of the last century , His father was I believe the president of an agricultural college . He did not have enough time to raise the son as he had wished . He knew a crusty old rancher out in the Dakotas or perhaps Montana and sent his son out there for a summer to work at the age of perhaps 16 . The rancher gave the son a job of digging post holes with a shovel on a post line . Left him off in the morning and at noon picked him up for lunch. . The author said one day the rancher stopped off at noon and not much work had been accomplished. As he walked to the truck he carried the shovel and a broken handle. . He sheepishly told the rancher ... I guess I did not know how strong I was .. The reply was .. If you knew how to use the shovel correctly you would have never had broken the handle....
In a SHTF situation you own one shovel and no extra handles...Perhaps someone died and and it is up to someone using that only shovel. ... to do the grave digging .... You just hope it is someone that can use it correctly....
I'm not digging any graves, you can rot on the ground and feed the critters. Nice story though.

I just read the first book and really liked it. I like it more than the James rawles books so far. I'm going to have to get the sequels to the original.
Definitely gave me some things to think about and consider.

One of my neighbors once ask if I was buying gold just in case there was a collapse.
I said "No I'm buying lead".
He stared at me like I was nut then said "why would you buy lead."

Funny but true. Gold would be useless during a collapse that's long-term. Lead would be the most precious commodity besides food itself.
I say when SHTF we all get together as NYGF brethren and live out our days.

Agreed, but there are lots of things that I'd rather have than gold if SHTF. While have some SHTF isn't a bad thing, concentrating on gold isn't the wisest idea. I would be way more willing to take excess food, rope, salt, nails, etc in trade than I would gold.
One lesson I learned in 1993: Never barricade yourself in something that is made of combustible material.

Yes, of course, but having a certain amount of gold will get you access to things that otherwise would not be available to you, like food, rope, salt, nails, etc..

There's the SHTF scenario that includes TEOTWAWKI and the shorter term SHTF like in a weather related calamity. In TEOTWAWKI scenario gold & silver won't sustain value for very long. That's when essential supplies for life and some comfort will reign supreme.
In the shorter term SHTF scenario where electric is out for maybe 3-6 weeks and people can't access cash from ATM's or charge on credit, you'll see the gold and silver take on a more valuable trade value.

I have several like minded neighbors, so I'm fortunate in that regard. And ever since my yard sign was stolen I have no hope of being the Gray man in my neighborhood. While my plan would actually be to bug out upstate,, depending on the situation I may be forced to bug in for a period of time in which case myself and a small handful of neighbors would be forced to form an alliance for mutual protection. And in a handfull of more years my 3 sons will be my own little army.
That is a maybe at best during a prolonged event. The reason for gold is to preserve your wealth after the collapse is over and during the rebuilding phase. It may or may not have any value during the collapse. It all depends upon who you are looking to trade with.

To be fair, I normally buy tools as I need them. I only just recently needed a socket wrench. Picked up a kobalt mechanics set I think.

If I had food, rope, salt, and nails in a long term collapse, I would not part with them for gold. Now if you gave me bullets, guns, or a deer, you could have them. Gold to me as a shopkeep or trader would be as good to me as a dollar or a paper check.

I try to maintain at least 2k rounds of ammo for my AKs. I'd like to increase that maintenance number, but it's difficult with the limited space I have at home. Although right now I'm around 3.5k since I recently stocked up.

Maybe, maybe not. Its been my observation that there are always those that will bet on gold in any circumstance, it may be a matter of timing like you illustrate but I guarantee they are out there. My gold is in the form of jewelry, and in that form might even be considered useful in day to day living, for my wife anyway. I also have a scale and nippers.
I guess I don't understand arguments against having an amount of gold or silver at hand, it is a survival tool no different than ammo or food.
