I think many of the "well hated" stories stemmed from early Glocks chambered for the round and some shooters complaining about sharp recoil. I was looking for a P99 in 9mm but never found one for the right price but came into one in 40 with very few rounds through it. The PO didn't like the recoil. I don't find it to be a problem and to me it's pleasant to shoot, and shoots very well. I'm accurate with it on center mass targets out to 80yds, I couldn't' shoot that well with my 45acp.
The plus for me is the easy access to ammo, all the LEOs in the area shoot 40 and my gunsmith gets huge amounts of brass from the range where they shoot.
