Both uppers and lowers are very easy to assemble. The hardest part is deciding what you want. Once you have that, the rest is gravy.

Start with it's purpose - play thing, hunting, competition, something else ? Decide caliber. Then choose the barrel length, profile, twist, and manufacturer. Furniture is driven by both function and aesthetics. Lower receivers have fewer options to concern yourself with, but there are choices to be made there too.

The biggest problem is making all those choices. Quality concerns and cost have to be watched as well. You can easily build a rifle from the ground up for $1000. Then again, you can easily spend $ 2000 building one. It all depends on what you want to do with it.

I have all the tools you need, should you decide to create your own, and I can help you if you wish.

Most of my guns are just for the fuck of it. 5.56 is my go to round. I don't reload and I have a shit ton of ammo. Did I say shit ton? More like a boat load.

I am researching now. Lots to learn. I have searching around the Anderson Manufacturing website, I like some of what I see.

It does away with the whole Delta ring, and the front end furniture mounts directly to it, giving a solid mount while making it look sleek and seamless. They have several options to choose from. I built a bunch of uppers using that system, and I really like them.

Awesome. One suggestion if you havent built one before- pick up an oops kit. I once spent a long week waiting for one friggin' $0.96 spring (buffer detent) to go shoot a new rifle because I rocketed it into the stratosphere whilst cramming in the buffer assembly.

Anybody that has owned a couple and looking for more, it's time to build. There's really not much to it. I've done a few with just a couple basic hand tools. Most of the free float handguards nowadays are very easy to install. I do have an upper vice block if you need to borrow it.

It's harder to decide on all the parts than it is to build it.

Just a,,,so you know post. I Had a carbine gas upper that I never had problems with. Sold it to my buddy who I just built that AR10 for,,,he has had it for a year and has had no problems with it. Cycles beautifully......

That being said I have heard of numerous people having problems with the carbine gas system. Your best bet is to either find a barrel or a complete upper that uses a mid length gas system or even a rifle length gas system.

I will add something. You dont need any special tools to put together the lower receiver side. Just need tools to put together the upper. You need a upper receiver clamp so that you can put the receiver into a bench vise and you need a Armorers wrench so you can tighten the barrel nut. If they are lower quality receivers you will need a couple of pin punches. The higher quality receivers use tiny threaded hex head screws instead of roll pins.

So if you were to buy a already put together upper,,,you would need no tools to put together the rest of the gun

Like tinker toys, you can get it wrong. As far as eye popping, wear safety glasses and like BD said, an oops bag, or even two is essential.

Here's a couple detailed, step-by-step vids on assembly. They're really not too difficult at all.

For the pivot pin detent on the lower I just use a razor blade to hold it down.

And make sure when you drive the roll pin for the trigger guard that you support the bottom ear with a block of wood. Very easy to snap it off if you don't.

Good advice above. I use an Xacto knife but it's just a personal preference. Oh and also there's the cotter pin trick tho I didnt find it that helpful for me.

There are also a bunch of lowers out there that use set screws for things like the bolt catch, which is nice to have and makes the process a little faster, but not necessary. I've got both- I think it probably saved me 10 minutes, and a little stress on not having to tape up and drive the pin.

ALG makes nice stuff. This reminds me of one other thing- billet is nice but some billet uppers won't take handguards that have anti-rotation tabs. Forged milspec should take damn near any handguard out there.

And actually one other thing, heh heh. Make sure your handguard has enough clearance for your gas block or you won't be able to install your barrel...

nope, i am looking at it this way:

you probably don’t have all the tools to do it. If you are only going to build one it may not be worth investing in the proper tools. A factory gun gives you a warranty to fall back on if there is an issue with it not going bang.

if you are just buying a complete lower and a complete upper then are you really any further ahead of buying a factory gun with a warranty?

if you are going to build one it may be more expensive than a factory gun.
tolerance stacking can be an issue with LEGO guns sotry to stick with the same brand for barrel, bolt and the same goes for upper, lower receivers and hand guard.

if you are really interested in doing it I will help out as much as possible.
