If officers are responding to something that needs more than a .40 pistol, you don't want them to show up with a pistol caliber carbine.

Isn't the whole point of having officers equipped with rifles that .40 sometimes isn't enough ?

That *is* one of the more likely reasons you'll need officers with rifles.

A) Not incompetence...For 150 years law officers have used rifles chambered in pistol calibers. B) Ruger made a whole series of Pistol caliber carbines right up till the mid -2000. C) The J &R Carbine is actually a very high quality, very robust simple blowback design. D) since unSAFE was choked down our throats, police have been exempt from the modern sporting rifle and 10 round mag B.S....

The days of local community peace officers are over, now we have Militarized "Police" militias with armored tanks in our communities....does it make you feel safer?

I can't comment on the decision, not being familiar with police work or the situation. It would be pretty nice to have only one type of ammo and magazine and pistol caliber carbines are growing more popular for good reasons. With my life on the line I'd want an entire arsenal in my car, shotguns, 308s, but I'm a shoot first questions laters type and unsuited for police work.

That was my take too. So 5.56 is now armor penetrating. Now the argument could be made it has more penetrating capabilities over the 40 which could make a difference with all the heavy clothes people wear in the winter time. There were a lot more "facts" in there that were wishy washy too. It's almost like the author already had his mind made up and wrote piece to support his opinion and not be objective.

I don't think this choice amounts to incompetence but I do think a 5.56 rifle would be a much better choice. 5.56 over penetration is a widely belived myth.

That's probably the only reason the average Buffalo Police patrol cop would need them. I don't see them needing to take a 150 yard plus shot. Their carbines would already do that.

And yea. That article has as much skewed non-factual data as a regular anti gun article.

The "glock rifle" business is probably supposed to mean the lower that takes glock mags.

I don't know, sometimes something is better than nothing.

I think it is a shame that any group has to suffer in their safety due to pure ignorance. Police departments and individual Americans included. They did not get the rifles they wanted/needed due to pure ignorance and propaganda.

These same officers are responding already without these new and 'improved' tools of the trade.

There are some AR's in the department, not enough for all on the road. This is yet one more reason why politicians and non LE officials should not be involved in these decisions.
