Is there any reason NOT to get a 40 S&W? Any guns to avoid?

Again resorting to stupid graphics and childish name-calling...and people wonder why gun forums have such a bad reputation.
The OP seems pretty interested in getting a .40s&w, as he has said he is already looking at specific pistols. I interpret that to mean he is set on the cartridge, he just wants to find a suitable pistol.
But, he should listen to you of course...he shouldn't buy anything that was designed in the 1990's or earlier because it sucks, and he shouldn't get .40s&w because it's no longer a relevant cartridge.
It's amazing how much the internet experts know...if we could just get people like you assigned to cancer research, we'd have a cure in mere minutes.
If he was so dead set on getting .40sw why would his title be is there any reason not to get it.
Sounds like he has an itch for the .40 but is interested in the down sides of the round so why wouldn't we tell him his shitty it is and soon to be the next .357sig or .38 super?
As for the cancer comment, no even if people like me get assigned to the research they still wouldn't "find a cure" there is no profit in curing something but there is a hell of a lot of money in treatments and well researching so they would want to milk that as much as they could

I've got 2 40's, an HK P30 and a Shield 40. The HK is a great gun, feels great in the hand, has reassuring weight, and it just looks beautiful. The Shield has been a learning experience for me. Taught me to learn to grip better and how to control recoil. If I shot more often, I'd be a lot better. Still, I've learned a lot from it. You can control the recoil, you can be accurate with it.
Only reason I have the Shield in 40 is because the HK was my brother's when he was in the Navy, stationed in Virginia. When he came home, I added the HK to my permit. At the time I was looking for another gun, I wanted to keep things simple, so I opted for the 40.
I buy my ammo from Mike. He makes fun of me for having 40, but not seriously. When he gets my shipments in, he sends me snapchats of him throwing it right in the garbage. You learn to roll with the jokes after a while. Do what you want, there's plenty of reasons to buy it and plenty posted to not purchase, as you requested

It’s snappy. But most have no problem controlling it with practice.
The second reason is it beats on the gun. Pats wear out faster. In retirement, I can’t just go buy a new gun at a whim like most here. Or even get it repaired if it’s beyond my own ability to fix.
I would buy the 9mm or 45 over another 40 for that reason. My 40s sit in the safe with my other less concealable weapons with exception of the 40 baby Glock. Even then, I am more likely to carry a single stack 9 in retirement.

Truebeliever, I am retired too and have to budget my money as well. I just don't see maintenance on a .40 as anything more extraordinary than any other firearm. Maybe I have been lucky but in all my years, the only gun that required something beyond my own ability to fix was a Springfield Armory rifle, which turned out to be a simple fix, but a tad beyond my understanding at the time. As stated previously, I have fired thousands of rounds through my .40 and other than simple cleaning, I have never had a problem. Of course my good fortune with the .40 is only anecdotal. Is their something that shows the .40 is more susceptible to failure through usage than other similar calibers?

Excessive wear is a left over interweb thing from when 40 came into the world and guns were not built to handle it all that well such as glocks.
All that has been fixed with pretty much all if not all manufacturers

So far it was just a spring for me. Replaced the spring and it was good to go. But a lot of departments are switching to the 9 in large part to maintaince issues.

I would try out different glocks. They have a few 40 cal versions all with different grips and styles. It is super sturdy and nice to pull out every once in a while to shoot. It does not require a whole lot of maintenance as well.

Shot a Glock 22 this afternoon.
I could tell I wasn't shooting a 9 but it was fine.
If I find a good deal, I'll get a .40 but wont aggressively hunt for one.

I ordered a Ruger SR9 & matching Ruger SR40.
I have 3 extra SR40 mags from Ebay ( $20 shipped for all 3).
I paid $300.88 shipped for the 40 ( Targetsportsusa) . I figured, hell its cheap enough and has good reviews....so why not?

Nice! I picked up a VP9 at the same time as well, must be a 9&40 sale going on somewhere. My mags cost 42 each though

They're $449.00 locally, plus tax.

I would say both targets are dead.
First time I had the pistols out. I wanted to see how they ran. These are the first HK guns I have owned.

I normally carry a 1911 in 45. Still don’t completely trust striker fired guns yet, maybe one day in the future but for the moment 8 rounds of 45 is adequate.

I like .40ncaliber handguns. The .40 was designed to replicate the stopping power of the .45ACP with the capacity of a 9mm. It compromises in both factors, but I think it does it well. That we can carry a G27 with 9 + 1 .40 caliber bullets is quite extraordinary when compared to a Colt Commander in heft and size.

That's a myth. A .40 will out-penetrate a .45 ACP through hard barriers but in soft tissue it behaves the same as a 9mm if using premium 9mm ammunition.

OK, It is a compromise in capability, but I think that is what was wanted by the ballisticians, which I am not. I still like it. I have more .40's than 9's and more .40's than .45's. Iguess I'll learn for sure if I'm ever unlucky enough to get in a gunfight.
The only time I've ever had to shoot a threat was in the woods and I used a 10mm. The only times I was in close proximity to gunfights I was a non-participant and unarmed.
