The law doesn't say permanent but your reasoning is sound. It has to be permanent or else it would still be able to be fired.
On the same note, the kydex fin isn't permanently attached to the pistol grip.

I think the laws are ridiculous and the workarounds even more so. And even more so ridiculous are the way people try to justify some workarounds as kosher just because they want a certain gun. It doesn't take a scholar to read a law. A good understand of basic English is all that's required.
The law doesn't say fixed mag. It said "ability to accept a detachable magazine." So you have to make to where your rifle cannot accept a detachable magazine.
The law says "a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon." Attaching a piece of kydex or a nail or sometime else to it doesn't change it to not being a pistol grip. It's still a pistol grip with something else attached to it.
That's basic English unless there is a law or definition in a law that says that a pistol grip is specifically X, Y, Z if it has these certain characteristics like California's law does.

Check out Ulster FIrearms on 9W in Milton NY. Great guys and a great selection of AR's. If they don't have what you want in stock they can get it fast and make it NY compliant. I bought a Savage MSR Recon. I went with prebuilt as this was my first AR. I put a 5 round limiter in the 10 round mag so I can hunt in NY with it. If I am at the range I can take the limiter out and the mag is 10 rounds again.

Or a fightlite lower and use a rifle as intended with detachable magazines. These laws aren't going away. You'll still get the superior accuracy of an AR with any upper of your choice.
Shit, I kinda like this. Like an M1/M14 in a way, which I've wanted to build.
Do something like this or deal w/ a mag button block/stop so you can have your features (except the removable mag) and get some BF10's and get good at loading that way.

Because Dark Storm when on a social media campaign declaring that their proprietary fixed mag lowers were the only approved lowers for an AR. They claimed that the NYSP told them that other fixed mag lowers and the Thordsen stock was illegal. This cost companies like Thorsden to suspend shipping to New York.
It was all a Hoax to drum up sales on their lowers. The NYSPRA investigated the matter and came to find out that the NYSP never gave such a determination. The NYSP also said that they are not in the business of determining legalities and it's for the courts to sort out so they don't know where Dark Storm got this information that their lowers were the only legal ones.
Fuck Dark Storm. They tried to make a buck on our backs by trying to screw over gun owners to only buy their products.

If you do a Google search there is a few posts regaurding this and DSI takes part in them for a sort time. Whole thing seems sketchy.
I think their fixed mag lower looks really nice with nice features. Considered buying one myself.

I absolutely get your argument. It makes sense. But I also do believe that if you have a thumbhole stock for example and then out put kydex in it so that your thumb can no longer go in it it's not a "thumbhole stock". Even though it is. Or was. But isn't now. But really it still is. It's just that it doesn't function as one because of the kydex so it's not actually after all is it.
Anyway, the Thordsen stock is almost certainly legal (stores certainly sell them and I think NY has given a begrudging nod to it), and it's also pretty damn comfortable. You can't easily thumb the safety on, but you can off, and it's easy to shoot.

Agreed, the Thordsen and spurs are sold at major retailers. I've seen pinned and welded muzzles at gun shops too. The law sucks and is vague about many points.

When we still had gander mountain in Endicott NY they sold stags with thorsden stocks. Seems like a big business like that would have been a good one for the state to go after if they were illegal. Than again it's probably easier to just screw over the little guys. Have not heard of anyone around here getting picked up for one and a local cop I know said that they are completely legal (whatever that is worth)
