Its possible that's the case, but I'm inclinded to agree with what Sec. Defense said about the launches not yet posing a real threat. If Kim threatens to lob a nuke tipped missile over Japan into the pacific, I'd say that's more of a threat.

BEIJING — A 3.5-magnitude earthquake was detected in northern North Korea on Saturday afternoon, near the nation’s known nuclear test site, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“This event occurred in the area of the previous North Korean Nuclear tests,” the USGS said on its website. “We cannot conclusively confirm at this time the nature (natural or human-made) of the event.”

An official at South Korea’s meteorological agency said they were analysing the tremor, which they put at magnitude 3.0, but the initial view was that it was a natural quake.

“We use several methods to tell whether earthquakes are natural or manmade,” said the official, who asked for anonymity.

“A key method is to look at the seismic waves or seismic acoustic waves and the latter can be detected in the case of a manmade earthquake. In this case we saw none. So as of now we are categorising this as a natural earthquake.”

The earthquake was detected in Kilju county in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea’s known Punggyeri nuclear site is located, the official said.

The Chinese administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred around 0830 GMT, was recorded a depth of zero kilometres.

All of North Korea’s previous six nuclear tests registered as earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 or above. The last test on Sept.3 registered as a 6.3 magnitude quake.

A secondary tremor detected after that test could have been caused by the collapse of a tunnel at the mountainous site, experts said at the time.

Satellite photos of the area after the Sept.3 quake showed numerous landslides apparently caused by the massive blast, which North Korea said was a hydrogen bomb.

The head of the nuclear test monitoring agency CTBTO said on Saturday that analysts were “looking at unusual seismic activity of a much smaller magnitude” in North Korea, and that it would have more details to come.

There was no immediate reaction from China’s Foreign Ministry, but the news was widely reported by Chinese state media outlets and on social media.

We only have something like 23 anti-ICBM missiles in Alaska capable of shooting down North Korean missiles. They have to launch several to ensure they'll take out a single missile. So it's a game NK is playing, trying to get us to launch some and see if they'll even work? Nobody knows 100%. And if we waste them on blanks we're screwed.

So while I still think NK is completely bluffing, if it really comes down to it I bet we nuke em preemptively since our military is pretty belt and suspenders cautious.

Theater Missile defense are fairly close range weapons designed to hit missiles in boost phase (if in range) and some mid flight range , the terminal range , reentry into atmosphere is the toughest phase for a few reasons , 1 multiple warheads , 2 decoy warheads,3 debris from missile opening and separation from rockets and 4 , they are traveling at 4 miles a second something like 18,000 miles an hour.

Thadd missiles have a range of 125 miles, and they are placed in the path that the missile will have to take if launched from N Korea. But 125 miles is a pretty small area when you consider the west coast is about a 1000 + miles long
under ideal test conditions these missiles have about 35 to 70% hit rate . Not very comforting. and there are only a hand full available. After the soviet union collapsed there wasn't a big push to get anti ICBM missiles going. The pentagon spent their budgets fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan for 17 years and are still using fighters from the 70s and 80's .

The best possible outcome for the US in a war is to get the majority of ICBMS on the ground in a first strike. They may be able to knock out 50-75 % before they are ever fired. and 35 to 50 % in the air , but some are definitely getting through. which could mean millions of American dead .

This. NK could theoretically fool our defenses by spamming off a bunch of crappy mid range unarmed missiles to act as decoys just to get us to waste our precious and limited interceptors and then in the middle of their barrage fire their armed warhead ICBMs

I also read that our missle defense won't really work against MIRVs (multiple independent re entry vehicles) so I'm sure NK wants to develop those next.

They need specialized materials which are going to be difficult to acquire with all the sanctions on them. They also have no oil and no oil reserves which means they won't last long in a modern war. Not to mention they have problems feeding thier people in the best of times.

There are also many people who disagree with this.


Nk continually "exceeds expectations" and is seemingly more advanced (at least in respect to missiles and nukes) than our intelligence communities expected.

NK also receives considerable tech support from iran, pakistan, china, defected Russian scientists etc... They have advanced their program much farther and more rapidly than any expected. There is no reason to expect them not to continue on their path.

They also DO NOT need a re entry vehicle to detonate a high altitude emp. Heat shielding a warhead for a 300 mile detonation is unnecessary. The re entry vehicle is needed for a more conventional air burst or ground burst but not an emp.

Focusing on their citizens eating grass while very true, is irrelevant to North Korea's military and technological capabilities and just distracts from what they are capable of.

Yes, a nuclear state doesn't have food for their own citizens, but they still have nukes, chemical and biological ahlgents and a delivery means

The only reason the Soviets beat us to space is that they had no issues killing cosmonauts. No regards for the life of its people. Its 2017 and the Russians still use the same space tech they developed in the 1960s .

As for space, the Saturn V was pretty much brute force as well. Not much difference from the V2 but scaled up.
