Need to Choose a Stock for the AR

Ordered the Magpul STR and a Spike's Tactical buffer tube assembly, along with a castle nut wrench. Already have a torque wrench and some punches - hopefully the right sizes. Going to head over to the local hardware store and see if they have a clevis pin. Hopefully that will do it. Until sights, anyway.

Okay, re-watched a few videos this morning. Another question. If you stake the castle nut, what happens if you want to change anything?

One reverse turn of the wrench brakes it free. Staking puts a light lock on the nut only to prevent backing off.
Turn the wrench in reverse you wont even know it was there.

1/4" drill bit inserted backwards also works.

It also makes recoil lighter since all the weight is up front. That could be a good thing.

My preference is as light as possible coming from a combat orientated standpoint.

No military experience but as far as gun weight while hunting, I always build the lightest guns and when I do build them, I balance them. Recoil is a non issue on a 223 AR or 204 AR or a 6.8 AR. When I'm shooting any of them I can get the reticle back on target in a heartbeat for a follow up shot if need be. Maybe its because its balanced and light.

and I'm always on the move when chuck hunting,,,I hunt chuck paradise/a Bergen spot,,,its probably the best place in the country to hunt chucks.

My first thought was -just as well in this part of the world. My next thought was - fuck it. I told him, "I'm building a rifle." He says, "A rifle? (pauses). A rifle?" LOL.

I originally had ordered a Magpul fixed CARBINE stock to finish out my BulletGuy build, but I thought it was too short. I ended up sending that back and ended up using the Magpul fixed RIFLE stock, it fits me well and it is a nice smooth shooter due to the rifle length buffer/tube.

One can install all those with the help of a simple nail or wood dowel.
More times than not springs have too much tension or because the actual pins are too sharp.
One needs to take this into account to make an easier to operate receiver.
Same thing with the safety one in the back. It can use some TLC too.
Trigger conditioning is also important and sometimes hammer springs are so hard and out of spec
that might impact the cycling.

If it makes you feel better I've done waaay more shooting as a civilian than I did in the Army.
What's the difference between ex-military and someone who's never served?
The ex military guy is damn proud to be a civilian!

That is not that unusual if one has been shooting long enough, obviously also depends where one servers
and for how long.
I might never shoot again the same type of firearms I shot in the service but these days I am more
interested in accuracy and consistency than anything else. It evolves the same way as sex, it is
not about quantity by quality! lol

I highly recommend getting the tool for the front pivot pin install. I've built half a dozen lowers without one and this is the most fiddly step IMO. On a couple I got it first try - on a couple I had trouble. The detent loves to shoot out, hit the ceiling and find a hiding place. Bought a tool on Amazon recently and have yet to use it. Happy to lend it.

I use a spare front pivot pin for installing the detent. push it in from the opposite side, depress the spring and detent then, push the spare over the detent line up the front pivot pin and push the spare pin out. done!
