It's all insane but the two things that really stand out to me are the written test and even crazier the part about live fire. How the hell can you pass that if you're not allowed to touch a gun until you get your permit? Not everyone grew up playing with guns/air rifles or are naturally good shooters. Also, imagine having to do even a quarter of this to vote.
Yes. Again. Imagine having to do that every four years to vote. I'm so glad I'm out of that miserable state.Don't forget this is also required training every 3 years for those with a license already.
I did the math with some guesstimating. I used Rocheater Defense website and their classroom offerings.
They have a 3 to 4 hour class called "NY Permit Legalities and Firearm Safety" we will just say 4 hours.. it cost $60.
Well we still need 12 more hours of class time. So stick with $60 for every 4 hours that's an additional $180, add that to the above $60 for the full 16 hours. Total is now $240
Next we have to have 2 hours of live fire. So let's say $30 (being generous) Now we are at $270. But how much shooting will be done, let's make up a number and say 50 rounds of ammo, so another what $20
That brings our total to $290 for the training requirements that must be done every 3 years
States don't reciprocate because ny won't reciprocate. No right should be burdened.I have no problems with it except for the 16 hour class length. It should be 4-6 hours, the same as your drivers education class where more people get killed by cars. There is a classroom requirement in Worstchester. The live fire training I think should be a requirement since it may allow other states to recognize NY permits. A lot of states which do not have reciprocity have the live fire requirement for their permit holders. I think that is the reason why the NYS permit has limited reciprocity but I could be wrong here.
Accidents happen he said. Accidental discharges? So professional that he can't admit it's a negligent discharge?DEA agent shoots gun in class room on gun safety . LOL ..

My problem with a live-fire accuracy requirement is that by law you are not allowed to touch a handgun prior to the class. They are requiring people to demonstrate proficiency with something the first time they are using it.I have no problems with it except for the 16 hour class length. Bullet points:
- 4/5 rounds on an 11x25.5 inch target at 4 yards.
- 16 hour course (with a total of 6 hours minimum on certain topics).
- 2 hours of live fire training.
- Training on various laws surrounding sensitive places, use of force, other state and federal gun laws.
- Info on drugs/alcohol and firearm safety.
- Deescalation and situational awareness.
- 80% or greater on written test.
- other stuff.
The only people who will have to take the training to renew are those downstate. Most of the state will not be required to train to renew. This has been stated by the agencies tasked with formulating these guidelines. The difference is renew vs rectify. Downstate permits expire and must be renewed, all other permits are good for life and are just to be rectified with state police.Don't forget this is also required training every 3 years for those with a license already.
Well we will see on that. I think after the lawsuits die down they will expand it to all NYS.The only people who will have to take the training to renew are those downstate. For now……A statement from Rochester Personal Defense yesterday on their Facebook page
“Looks as if the NY State's Attorney confirmed what we suspected:
Current concealed carry license holders who live outside of NYC, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties are NOT required to take the training.
Only those that live in the counties listed above will need to. That is due to their county having a "renewal" system in place.
Upstate counties do not have a renewal setup.”
