NEW Surefire lights - extreme output

I would go along with the concept of lights and muzzle flashes attracting bullets. With modern night vision equipment there's a minimal need for lighting. Third generation + night vision equipment can be used for identifying friend versus foe. I can use an infrared scope to locate possible targets and then a night vision device to positively identify the possible target. Modern NVD's are amazing equipment, and it is definitely a game changer when operating at night. Any light with lots of lumens is a target. However, I do have a light attached to my night stand firearm for those times when my NVD isn't accessible. If I had a choice, it would be NVD and no lights.

$2000 is prohibitively expensive. I have perhaps only one safe queen. I am considering selling that but the proceeds would go toward some glass or another rifle.

I keep a Streamlight TLR1-HL on my HD gun. Surefire is overpriced.

I feel more in to the "identify" category than the "it will give away my position" one. Plus, I live in the woods and often have to trek out to dispatch skunks and whatnot. Petty hard to see with no light.

Well, we are really only talking about self defense as civilians. We should not be pointing guns at unidentfied bogies, we really shouldn't be engaging beyond 100 yards.

Consideration in the budget for a proper IR illuminator (not the anemic one built in to the PVS14) and IR laser, perhaps. Don't forget PVS14 mounts and skull crusher or helmet.

Once you've used it you'll recognize it is a completely unfair advantage.

No they're new units. They come with skull crusher mount and an arm too. Oh, they include a built-in IR illuminator too. The one that I purchased included demist shield, a sacrificial window, an eye guard, a carrying pouch and a weapon mount. It's a complete kit for a reasonable price.

If the group returns to Cedar River Flow to camp next Spring maybe I'll put on a brief class on the difference between the generations. and let folks try out the different units. I have a variety of equipment, so it would be easy to demonstrate the differences. We should find someone with enough experience to put on a night shooting class, that would be cool.

I never liked the nogs we had in the Army. I always opted to not use them, even while driving. The grainy image and loss of depth perception never did it for me. Maybe I gave better than average night vision. I was always able to navigate at night behind the wheel unaided

So it appears that the "new" XH35 is only about 1/4 (or 1/3 cant remember off hand) or so the candela ot the x300u FWIW

My personal preference is 300-500 lumens. Hand held or attachable to an AR. Anything brighter than than you do take the chance of blinding yourself if it reflects off walls, ceilings, etc.
when outdoors, as was said before - 1 second of illumination. then move the F away from where you were just standing. Reevaluate, use another 1 second if need be. While i cant really think if a situation where as a civilian i would have to worry about this, low-light training is fun!

Oh I would most deff believe that it would be picked up by 5hr fiber optic tube
