hopefully one of the NYS Gun Groups will challenge this in court. Recertify should be nothing more than putting your name in FBI's crime database and check yes or no depending upon the outcome.

It's a hell of alot more than 5 minutes of labor for people like me that have sizable collections of pistols.
Not to mention if the state already had the information they wouldn't be asking for it..
Mark my words this is the lead up to another safe act type ban.. I am willing to bet they will go after any pistol that is capable of accepting a magazine larger than 10 rounds.. regardless of if you have compliant magazines or not.. and then they will demand proof of disposal of said pistols or they will use the fact that you have it on your permit as "probable cause" to search your premises..
Remember the Nazi's didn't just start rounding up the Jews.. they made them register and wear identifying markings (star of David).. this is the same thing as linking your pistols to your driver's license..

Remember most counties passes resolutions to not enforced the safe act.. and also remember the sheriff's depts work for the people (as they are elected) not for the state.. so if the sheriff's Dept decides not to cooperate with the state, short of the state getting a sopena to get the list of pistols you have, they have no idea..
Hence why they are looking for voluntary disclosure in the form of this "recertification".

Troopers catching criminal's.. that's laughable.. it's awful difficult to catch real criminals while they are on the side of the highway running radar to take money out of the pocket of the working class..

I can see both sides to this. The information is already there. They know what you have, Etc. I understand the worry as there is nothing on the up and up about the safe act and we all know it's purpose as a law on the books has very little to do with public safety. The whole thing is BS and they shouldn't need us to do anything regarding re-cert. The motive is probably one of simply having us do the work for them so that their little team in the newly minted pistol division, has less work to do. While the SP may have already had all this info and it may well have already been linked to you DL, the chill comes with the reorganization of it all. It does lend to the idea they are preparing for something because after all, why? Why now, what's changed?

My point is that the information is on record with the appropriate authority.. I am not on thier payroll, and to be honest.. it's none of thier fucking business what anyone possesses.. anyone that has a permit (with few exceptions) are law abiding citizens who went through the process. Why harass us anymore..

This I think is really the rub of it all. Will anyone lose their pistols (and as a result their long guns) from this immediately? Probably not or at least relatively few. However, give it a few months or even a few years down the line and pretty soon I suspect you'll see them pulling stuff. Maybe confiscation (less likely unless you have a mental health or some sort of criminal accusation) but probably more likely some sort of fee structure will be implemented. Even still, what other databases are they linked with? What happens if there is a mistake in another one of those databases that causes you to lose your firearms? Just like the "No-Fly List" there's no way to get off. Your wear that scarlet letter for life.

I didn't thoroughly look enough at this point because I don't care right now about this. That is why, though, I kind of hinted to that by saying "if there is a charge for this." Didn't feel I was over committing to joining the conversation.

There already isa secret list maintained by the state.. They won't tell you if your on thier MHL list.. it's been foild by a bunch of people already.. they refuse to disclose if you are on it
