NYGF shoot/range event, what would it take?

Travel and time are the issues for most.
perhaps an anonymous poll to see were the majority of members are?, or a North /South kind of thing?

I was having the same thought process that @redtail was having. I would assume that there would be a higher probability of this event happening if we used more of a centralized location for where the majority of the members reside instead of the smack dead geographical center of NY.

That is the geographical center, but what about the point that minimizes the distance traveled by all participants.

I would certainly be interested. It's hard for me to get away from the house/work for more than a day- and when I do get a down day or weekend at home, I am usually taking care of a lot of stuff here / errands round town- though I do theoretically have a bunch of time off coming up in late December.

I like this. It might overall be easier (even if it looks harder up front). "NYGF Day."

ETA potentially you would have options - drive 30-60 minutes to something local or make a weekend trip if there's something somewhere else you're interested in elsewhere. Etc.

I drive almost an hour now just to go hunting. I'd be willing to stretch that out a bit just to go shooting w/ forum members - whether it's pistols and knockdown targets, long range plinking, more of a challenge/bet for the more accomplished shooters, something. I've never shot my bolt over 100y and I just like to hear "ping!" when I shoot, so I don't care I guess.

I could even try to bring @NirvanaFan with me, we're both in Rochester.

I drive over a hour for both my hunting leases. If we can work something out with dsdmmat, maybe us local guys can drive up there.

And there's no way that the Bethel Woods folks will let you shoot on their property (that's in my neck of the woods).

I always say I'd be game for something like this, and in spirit I am, but I also know my schedule and unless it's on the Southern Tier/Hudson Valley region area I'm not sure if I would be able to make it.

That would make the most sense for making it more accessible for all members. I'm wondering how we should go about organizing this? One thing I hadn't considered, and I hope this isn't a buzz kill, is that most ranges only allow members to bring a small number of guests. So it would have to be set up as an official event...I guess???

That’s my experience as well. I did a predator hunting shoot and the one member set it up and was responsible for the event. We all had to pay to get it, it was $5 per person.

What about breaking the state into 3 general regions, North, South and West, and having people from each region coordinate with each other regarding how to make this possible?

I think if we wanna get people out there, make it for fun first. Let everyone come together, let everyone meet and get shooting together. Once you do that and we can gauge what kind of interest/participation you're gonna get, then you can decide if you wanna push it further.

By the time you pay for gas and ammo another $10-$20 for a range fee isn't significant anyway.
