Economics didnt ruin coal. Obama and his environmental plans did so China took it cheap. This is one of the main reasons Trump was elected.

And coal didn't make a comeback despite his friendly policies. That's how strong the economic forces behind the move away from coal are.
Coal mines aren't shutting down because China is buying the coal... if they were buying it, it would need to be mined...
For sure, Obama's policies didn't help coal at all, but it more has hastened the inevitable than caused it to go away. Similar to how the US govt. building roadways sped up the transition to cars, but even if the govt. didn't do that it would have happened eventually anyways because cars are just better. LNG is just better than coal.
I've said this before as well. All that power has to come from somewhere. And get to you somehow. That would require a massive overhaul of the electrical generation/grid. California already has rolling blackouts if they get a hot day. A stage 2 charger pulls 30-40 amps of 220. Roughly the equivalent of a central AC. What's going to happen when everyone comes home at 5:30 PM and plugs in their car? Where's all this new power going to come from?
Electric cars have a whole host of other issues too. Massive and toxic batteries. Charging times. Cold weather performance. What if you live in a place without private parking for a charger? What if you rent and landlord won't put in a car charger - do you just not drive now? Etc. etc. etc.
At their current stage I see electric cars as a non-viable solution in search of a problem.

Seems Standord university says the main reason is environmental regulations.
Yes it does say a bit of financial stuff but the environmental regulations came first and the financials came secondary.

From the article as well. They won’t build new coal fired plants because some other politician can just say oh coal bad shut them down. Coal will never come back to what it was because of this. The sulfur scrubbing emissions standards are just too great.
Yes as stated it’s a combination of both but environmental regs started it all. Once moved away from coal there’s no going back.

As can be seen from Figure 3, the coal plants retired in 2015 were quite old (the oldest began operation in 1944, the year the Allies landed in Normandy). In fact, as can also be seen from the figure, nearly all of the plants retired began operating more than 40 years ago. This suggests that the decline in coal-fired electricity generation is largely the result of an aging fleet of power plants, which may well have been retired years ago absent the Clean Air Act’s grandfathering clause.
Keep in mind gasoline powered cars and gas will likely follow the same trend and it’s not because battery powered cars are cheaper. It’s laws like these that are fueling this.

My dad brought up this fact when we were talking about California doing this. What about big apartment complexes and renters who don't own their property? It would be impossible for those people to have electric cars, unless the government is going to pay for enough charging stations for apartment complexes and rental houses.
