For anyone who might be interested, Orange County processed 908 pistol permit applications in 2020. During the period of the greatest gun sales in the history of our nation, Orange County processed less applications than they have in over a decade. For comparison, the last few years numbers are below.
I believe the reason the number is so low is because they are deliberately slow-walking the acceptance of applications. For a while they were making finger print appointments with wait times of over a year.
If you see our Sheriff, Clerk or County Executive, be sure to let them know what you think of their performance.

Why does it take the Orange County clerk's office so long to process an amendment?

I understand the process of applying for a permit, but once you have your permit why is necessary for the counties to be involved in future pistol acquisitions and dispositions. Why can't you just add or delete the item from the State Police database and once that is done a simple email from the State to show the FFL it's on file, pass the federal background check, and away you go?

Because the County Clerk is lazy and doesn't want to do her job. She off loaded a lot of her office's work to the sheriff. The sheriff doesn't want to deal with it and has his under sheriff handle it. The under sheriff is a power hungry anti-gun asshole. He tried to circumvent the judges, which resulted in 6 months worth of amendments having to get recalled and done over. He's deliberately slow walking the application and fingerprint process, and generally cucks up everything he gets his hands on.

good luck. as far as i know it should take 4-6 weeks. if you have brown it might be quicker. this is a link to my website where i have all of the information on who the judges are except Freehill is gone and is replaced by a new judge. I agree with everything except the County Clerk's office is lazy. They need another person or two. They are processing thousands of amendments each year.

Kim replaced Freehill. He was always pretty good. Quick turnaround on his end. The delays always came from the clerk's office.

I met her and she said the right things. From what ive heard, all the judges are issuing unrestricted permits now.
A friend who works as a court clerk has repeatedly told me the judges sign amendments within a day or so of receiving them from the clerks office.

She is not running for another term. She is the one who had gone along with the undersheriff and created this horrible system with the required classes and the problem with the undersheriff maintaining the "instructor list."

Being out of town this week, I didn't have time to go there Monday to drop off in person. Not even sure you can do that anyway as everything seems to be by appointment only. I mailed everything return receipt so we'll see how long it takes the USPS to even get it there.
Add one, delete one, and update employer/occupation.

Took exactly 5 weeks. Did notice that the judge signed on 1/20. Purchased from LGS located in ulster, who said no surprise with orange county.

Like I said, the fingerprint wait was about 6 weeks. She took the basic handgun safety course on a Wednesday evening in January. It was the night before her appointment for prints.
At the prints, they gave her the application and explained about the references and what else was required.
Took a few weeks to complete the application and she brought it in upon completion. No appointment needed to submit it.

Total time from application submission to permit issuance was 3 months.
You were correct. The interview was with a detective handling her file. No judge interview. The detective interview was March 26th.
