Interesting yes. I can see FMJs working as they have a better chance of getting to the vitals. Still were I looking for convenient bear defense I would pack a Glock 20. The stories linked show capacity and follow up shots are important and the 10mm gives a great balance of speed and power.
But I would try to follow the preventive measures to avoid a bear encounter in the first place. I've nothing against bears.

By us all we have to worry about is black bears. A FMJ or hard cast of any service caliber auto loader or revolver would get the job done. Most hard casts penetrate 30 plus inches in gel. That tour guide in Alaska killed a grizzly with 9mm Hard casts.
If I lived in Alaska or the north part of our country, I would pack a Glock 29 in 10mm for grizzlies. Same size as the 26 and would work for human and beast alike.

I know I can handle 10mm or .357 recoil well. It's all about making hits.

That article is internet research, and based on a very limited sample size at that...not the same as some other studies which have actually conducted interviews with the participants.
Those other studies have shown that firearms, while they can be effective, have a far lower success rate than 97%. And the idea that pistols are just as effective as rifles and shotguns for dealing with bears is just plain ludicrous. I'm sure some people have used 9mm and .22lr for bear defense; they're statistical outliers. Most people who carry day-in-day-out in bear country don't bother with those calibers. So just because you can find 5 people who carried and successfully used 9mm for bear defense doesn't mean that 9mm is just as effective as other handgun cartridges or rifle cartridges.

Shoots a rimless .500 S&W. Supposedly makes it the most powerful of the "Big Bore" ARs.
But they kinda cheated by using an AR10 receiver. .500 S&W doesn't out power a .308 does it?

Timely thread as I just literally a moment ago rewatched the revenant bear attack scene on youtube.
That story about the black bear with 14 .22 seems interesting. Not surprised one guy with a 22 pistol failed against a polar bear. That must have sucked. You really shouldn't be in country like that without some big guns.
Black bears rarely attack in any case. Grizzlies are another matter.

I think two of the biggest issues out there, especially when it comes to using less than desirable calibers on tough animals like bears, is that they have either, very tough skulls, or skulls with strange angles that can easily deflect a lackluster caliber, or both.
How much truth is there to this REALLY? Has anyone actually sat down, shot at a brown bear skull with assorted calibers, and really broken this down, trying to see what looks like it'll be effective, and what won't?
Because in all honesty, I don't see how in a pinch, something like a .357 magnum couldn't utterly disintegrate the skull of any North American game, and probably even African Dangerous game. Hell, a .22 can of course kill an elephant in very specific ways. I'd like to see similar tests on something like a Cape Buffalo, which to my knowledge, are known to be among the toughest game on the planet.
But in the end, isn't it as simple as, "Carry something adequate for what you might run into?" Wouldn't that solve most of the issue and pretty much end the debate? For science, I surely want to know more. But a guy carrying around a .22 pistol for bear protection in Alaska won't really care to listen anyway.. Just my two cents though.
