You are missing the likely triggers for such an incident here in the US.

Some sort of economic collapse is a likely trigger for a civil war, it isn't likely to happen without something like that triggering it. As you say we're all too comfortable.

But when the next great depression hits, and people here really are worried about affording food, then all bets are off. Make no mistake, such a collapse *is* coming, it's just a matter of when.
