Unlike U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, Russia didn't need to go back to Vietnam to clean up the mess it created in a first place.

If Russia wasn't a superpower, NATO would already eat it up and spit it out. Although Ukraine invasion was initially poorly planned and executed, the war in Ukraine showed weaknesses of NATO's equipment and tactics. As it stands Russia is winning the biggest war since WWII and only using a fraction of able bodied man to fight the war. NATO had their ass handed to them in Afghanistan by third rate poorly equipped militias.
