It's a shame we have to have these kind of threads, where we call each other stupid or where we say someone (in this case the guy from PA) has it coming to him.
In PA it is legal to buy a hand gun without a 'permit'. You can do so and have it in your home (e.g. the trailer), or on your person (but not in a vehicle). You can also transport said hand gun in a vehicle if unloaded and secured from your home to a vacation residence. You do need a License to Carry (Shall issue) if you are carrying concealed, carrying in a vehicle (as he was), carrying in Philadelphia, or in a declared state of emergency. No where in the article does it state if he has a LCF, nor does it state he doesn't. My guess based on the ease of getting a PA LCF (shall issue) is that he does have a PA 'permit'.
This is yet another example of why national reciprocity is so important. The people from free states don't understand and wouldn't even think that they need to do exhaustive research on draconian gun laws just because they are traveling somewhere or back on vacation. It is only we slaves that take great joy in others not realizing it, who spend hours talking about their permit process or the many hoops they have successfully jumped through just to exercise a constitutional right.

I can't answer for sure, but I have never encountered one..
I asked because it's just another regulation a out of Stater may not know, And the first reason he was pulled over. A trooper could over look a little bit of speed but not the trailer!

None that I know of...but who knows.
My guess is that this guy wasn't aware that he couldn't tow his trailer on the Taconic. He gets pulled over for that (and speeding). The police officer then asks him if he has weapons or perhaps the guy has the handgun in the same location as the registration, so he tells the officer upfront. Note in PA the state police keep a handgun 'sales' database, so the guy may have thought the police officer would know anyway. Also, in PA you have to tell an officer if you have a gun 'if asked'.
None of us know what really went down, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the traveler didn't think he was doing anything wrong and was cooperating with the police officer. In PA, a person traveling through the state may carry if they have a permit valid in any other state.
Again, I will say that we here on this forum are not typical gun owners. We spend countless hours discussing and arguing the nuances of the laws, and even after that there are still many conflicting opinions. The VAST majority of gun owners outside this shit hole of a state (in terms of politics and laws) would be completely unaware of the crap here that people go through or the danger to their constitutional rights just because they happen to travel through the state. We need to have big giant signs before entering the state like were in Germany warning people that they were entering the Soviet controlled East Germany, Poland, etc.

I feel most mature drivers are well aware that the laws vary from state to state....so the speeding cannot be excused, but the trailer and handgun issues should have been researched by driver before entering NY. Anyone who owns a firearm is aware that laws are not consistent from state to state. Anyone who owns a trailer should be aware that trailer towing laws may vary from state to state. Don't try to defend this driver's actions.

I will say this as respectfully as I can ... your attitude is typical and part of the problem of living in this state. "Any who owns a firearm is aware that laws are not consistent from state to state" inherently reflects who you are and the knowledge you've acquired over time. I feel pretty confident that if you had a true random survey of hand gun owners across the nation, that most of them from the free states who are legally licensed or from a constitutional carry state would be unaware that they could be arrested simply by having their handgun with them in their vehicle for protection when traveling. I see thread after thread where people are unwittingly ensnared in these kind of things, and the prevailing attitude from "I'm so smart" gun owners on this forum is that it is the stupid travelers fault and that they get what they deserve. Just remember, that many people in this state hold YOU in contempt for even owning a firearm, and would love nothing better than even more asinine laws to trip YOU up.

His pardon of her is good news (and we know that FUAC wouldn't do this), but she was arrested the Atlantic City prosecutor was trying to give her jail time. She lost her job, and had the state threaten to take away her children. By the way, she told the officer who pulled her over (for an unsafe lane change) that she had the gun which she legally acquired in PA after being robbed two times. But to you, she was going to get what she deserved....right?

I agree with and do not contradict your valid opinion. But...Ignorance is not above the law.
If you decide that you will take something on that can put you outside of Present Law, than it is 100% your responsibility to understand exactly what it is that you are doing so you are doing it leagally, no free rides.
We can hammer this out till the cows come how, the fact is the Law is the Law until it is changed.
I am going to 100% agree with both of these statements. Both are very logic. I travel a decent amount throughout the year, mostly family type vacations. I fall under LEOSA and I still study up on the laws of the States that I will be visiting. Always. We all agree that so many individual State laws suck balls; nearly all of the laws suck; but that does not take away the personal responsibility to research these laws. There is no way to know all of them, but knowing the basic laws can ensure you stay within the State law.
This holds very true of the States like NY that have some of the worst laws ever in history. Always look out for yourself, no one else will.

2 things. NY is the only state that requires a permit to possess. The other states mentioned require a permit to purchase but not too possess.
As far as who's fault this is.... It's the carrier's fault for not checking the laws. That is certain with no doubt. But you also have to blame the cop for looking for it.
There are cops out there who will not search a magazine for the eleventh round unless an arrest was made for something else and they have no choice but to. In this case, unless the guy admitted to having the pistol without being asked, the cop was looking for it and is against the 2A in my book.
If no other crimes where committed and the motorist made no admission without being asked that he had a pistol, the cop should have written the traffic summons and sent the guy on his way.
