If I was in free America I would have a trunk gun. Probably an AR in hard case with the mags ready to go. I'm not sure if the AR would be 5.56 or pistol carbine. It's good to dream isn't it.
In PA its legal, but I don't think its a super good idea. There are some young, nervous rookie cops out there, unlike the seasoned veterans we have here
If it's in your car, it needs to be concealed? Is it considered open carry just because it's not in your clothes?
Just make sure you put a drape over it, problem solved.
The only law I know of regarding long guns being carried in your car is part of the Environmental Conservation law. It says...
"§ 11-0931. Prohibitions on the use and possession of firearms.
2. No crossbow or firearm except a pistol or revolver shall be carried
or possessed in or on a motor vehicle unless it is uncocked, for a
crossbow or unloaded, for a firearm in both the chamber and the
magazine..."
I believe that is the law that everyone is thinking of when they say you can't carry a loaded gun in/on a vehicle. Someone could argue that this law doesn't apply if you're just driving down the road and not hunting. Personally, I think they'd have a good argument. However, I keep my guns unloaded (except for the pistol I'm carrying). It's not worth the hassle if something were to happen. I do leave ammunition in the magazines though. I'm not going to empty them all out at home and then turn around and fill them back up when I get to my range.
There may be local ordinances about carrying in specific cities or towns. The federal "safe passage" law says something about locking the guns up (I believe) when you travel through other states.

I run with a 1911 and a dozen magazines. If I cannot deal with an issue with 100 rounds of 45 ACP, I should probably drive home and get my Galil.
It would still be nice to have a rifle just in case. I'm not saying your wrong with the 1911. I just like the idea of having a little more range if necessary. But alas we live in this shit hole of a state so it's just dreaming.
Oh like when I was in the industrial part of Nashville this morning? If anyone needs a long gun in the vehicle it's a trucker. I'd keep an AR in a mount behind my seat, a shotgun in a mount behind the passenger seat, a full size handgun in a dash holster and something in either a cross draw holster on the hip or shoulder if I could. And I'd tattoo "Go ahead, make my day!" on my forehead.Cant you have rifles on a gun rack and the detach magazines for them in the glove box? Honestly though, a pistol on your person and a pistol in the center console should be enough to save your ass 99.9999% of the time. Been driving that way for close to 40 years and never had to use deadly force even once. Stay out of inner city ghettos and the odds are nothing weird will ever happen on your watch (unless a mudslime goes to the same mall you do - which is why I use amazon.com instead).
You could probably run a setup like this in your center console if it is big enough. That's how I would want a truck gun. It's not concealed. That is illegal. Perhaps it won't be enforced, but it is illegal.
It's not penal law and while you may lose a hunting license, or be fined for a violation, if you carry a loaded rifle in a vehicle in NY State (not talking about NYC because they are special) I doubt the NY Environmental Law has the weight or any potential for you to be found guilty of even a misdemeanor. That is my somewhat slightly educated guess on the subject. The only law I know of regarding long guns being carried in your car is part of the Environmental Conservation law. It says...

During any open season for deer, a person afield shall not possess shotgun shells loaded with a slug or ball unless he holds a valid license or permit to take deer or bear.
