Dog face referred to the foot soldier or infantryman. During WWII they lived in Pup tents, fought from and hid in foxholes ,were treated like dogs in training and wore dog tags for identification.
Ah. Well technically I was a Redleg. That, I belive, was a reference to the red stripe down the trousers of the old traditional artilleryman uniform.

I trained to become a Ranger until a serious knee injury took me out of the running. Not serious enough however to preclude me from being a grunt .
We had actually had a guy, Weaver was his name, worked in the training room, go out for Ranger training. The guy passes the selection process and then decides he doesn't wanna go through with it and goes back to the training room. No one could belive it! The training room refers to the Battery Comander's office for those that didn't know, so a clerical position in otherwords.

Very true. The wife and I owned a coffee shop and bakery prior to my deployment to Afghanistan in 2011. I made the donuts, cheesecakes, cinnamon buns and a few other things.

In training at Fort Benning, I lived in the Old WWII barracks right next to the Ranger Tower. I passed selection, trained, and then made a stupid move off the jump tower and messed up my knee. I rehabbed my ass off, but it was never quite good enough to get me back into Ranger school.
I was a rotor head in the army for 20 years. Used to look down to the ground and think man that has to suck. Lol
That sucks. Que sera sera.

ok, back to the topic at hand. As much as I despise it , I 'm going to go to the local Wally world tomorrow and pick up a couple of boxes of .223 / 55grn. American Eagle and Winchester 55grn. 5.56 just as a jumping off point to see what this rifle likes. I'll grab anything else that they have ( as long as it's brass) and see how it shoots.

See, I have no fukin idea what that is. I seriously need to do some more research.
Its the the round Black Hills Ammunition developed for the Mk 12 SPRs the Seals were using in Afghanistan. It uses a 77gr Sierra matchking bullet with a cannelure to ensure fragmentation. Out of the Mk 12 rifle its supposed to be effective all the way to 600 yards, possibly even beyond. We're talking terminal effect here, not just trajectory. It was so good the M4 equipped assaulters were swiping it from the DMR guys and found it effective from the shorter carbines as well. Has really wicked fragmentation at even relatively extended ranges. Its adoption killed off the 6.8 spc for military sevice, its that good. Pretty pricey stuff though.

The 75 grain hornady match load is a good one too, as is well the 69 grain Federal gold medal match load.
I have been around, IMHO going from a .308 to a 5.56 in the pile of junk M16 was not only stupid but dangerous and, now they are going back to larger rounds. I have shot both the M14/1A and the afore mentioned M16 and in the field I would take the M14/1A over the M16 every time.
Ok sorry my bad............ Do you reload at all? I use to shoot a 22-250 with Hornady .224 53 gr Match grade H.P. at 4100 ft/s the only issue was they are lead core and there is some weight distribution problems with that. I could cover 5 shots @ 100yds with a dime. I don't what to say about factory loads as I never have used them.....
It's hard to tell if one is being facetious on the internets, but for the benefit of others, no. The mk 262 mod 1 is really just a commercial match load using 77gr Seirra MatchKing bullets. Black Hills requested a cannelure, apparently to Seirra's chagrin, be added to the bullet for military use. It's really nothing unconventional like the mk318 or M855A1 but everything I've ever read about it says it works very well. I've read numerous accounts claiming 1 round drops on targets at extended range.
This Black Hills stuff is $1.10 a round though!! 
I buy this stuff instead which is supposed to a perfect clone. It is currently costing me .67 a round. I'm just one more case away from my initial stockpile goal.

Why doesn't some company just start making armor piercing ammo in a new caliber, say 5.56X39 or something to get new ap on the market and never sell a pistol version. That way the projectile would be there and could be pulled for shtf.
Is it illegal to be in possession of just the AP bullets themselves?

I wasn't trying to be facetious. I don't know what would make you think that. It was a serious question. I remember them adopting an open tipped round.
Anyway, upon further review, the rounds are different.
