One annoying thing about .223/5.56 Saigas is the lack of reliable mags on the market! Factory mags are decent! Another well known company that makes mags for them is questionable... There was a 5.56 VEPR a while back from NYLA I would of grabbed, if not for the lack of availability of reliable mags! In general, that’s an annoying thing with former Eastern Bloc systems, you don’t have the same “standardization” that you have with NATO systems!
If I did a 5.56 kalash it would get the Definitive arms STANAG conversion.
Which may be no longer the only option with PSA
Scratch that I'd also love a galil or galil ace in 5.56 or a valmet
I think STANAG AK conversions will become increasingly popular in the near future, which is at loggerheads with a resurgence in 5.45 whic is a little baffling to me. I don't see why anyone would choose 5.45 over 5.56 these days.

Especially when you consider supply and availability matters. Further unconstitutional import restrictions could certainly make matters even more difficult.* That alone makes .223/5.56 the better option for us here in the states. As a round, 5.45 certainly has its merits!

Well the main merit of 5.45x39 was you could get a 2160 round crate of 7n6 for $179. With that no longer a reality there is nothing the 5.45 that the 5.55 can't do better. The wide variety of ammuntion in 5.56/223 from cheap 55/62gr FMJ blasting ammo to hunting/defensive soft point to OTM match trumps every other intermediate caliber, you can do just about anything with a 5.56.

Agreed! For most of my applications it’s 5.56 all day, everyday!
I miss those days though. Quality surplus ammo dirt cheap, quality AK74 parts kit rifles, likewise for cheap...... Afternoons spent bumpfiring the above into the berm till the furniture caught fire. Didn't matter it was all so cheap and disposable. Shooters today will never again see such plenty, that was the true appeal of those rifles and that cartridge, especially once you stoped the furniture burning and the barrel smoking and found the rifle still capable of center punching soda cans at a hundred yards. I was very dismissive if the Kalashnikov until my shooting buddy convinced me to pickup a Bulgy parts kit rifle at the local pawnshop/gunstore. It was stuck in a wooden barrel, muzzle down, with a whole collection of other AKs and SKS. Paid $400 for it and whomever put it together did and excellent job, all the rivets and welds were perfect, front sight tower was straight and true. Was a great rifle, wish I had kept it.

Tumbling is not the end all for terminal ballistics. A tumbling bullet is only somewhat better than penciling straight though, expanding soft points do more damage and fragmenting bulleys are the most destructive of all. Soft points are more consistent in the way they behave but when fragmenting bullets do their thing it shreds tissue to hamburger.
Nothing tops 77gr OTMs in soft tissue. And I'll tale my Gold Dots over that Scott stuff too.

Kind of how I feel about 9mm akms now. I have a Romanian nak9 pcc. Wolf 9mm is about 12 cents per round. Lots of bump firing .

Definitely not into bump firing, however I definitely see the value in a PCC AR or AK (for purposes of this thread) for training (& other practical benefits, situation depending)!
How is that Romanian NAK9 treating you? Any reliability issues? How many rounds you have through it?
NYLA sells a Romanian RAK9 that takes standard AK furniture. It has a Glock Mag Adapter. They obviously sell it in various configurations that attempt to establish compliance.
Anyone have experience with these?
There was a dude on here a little bit back, not sure if he posted on this thread (I believe he did) but I think he did his own thread about the Romi that he got from NY Legal arms but not sure if he did a follow up on how it ran

Might have been me. Not sure. Turns out it is a RAK9 and not a NAK9. Whoops! Anyways, runs like a sewing machine. No problems. I probably have 1k through it.

• Those 1k rounds were with Wolf?
• What mags you run, Glock (factory)?
• What kind of groups, at what distances? (I get that it’s a PCC AK variant, using mostly Wolf)
• Obviously that “Gas tube” is there more for “show”, as this is a “blow back”. I’m assuming I could get a Ultimak on there and stick a T2?
• Beyond that, from what I understand, that’s Romanian made, imported by Chiappa? Takes a lot of AK furniture?
• Sights canted any worse than typical Romanians?
• Is that PA Micro, I heard those run very well for what those are?

-Yes Tula and wolf along with maybe 100 brass cases lawman
-Glock factory. I tried magpul but I didn’t like the way they load steel cases ammo. No malfunctions just super sticky. They were fine with brass cased.
-I sighted it in resting on a pickup truck hood at 50 yards. Decent groups I didn’t measure.
-no idea about the ultimak. The barrel on the RAK9 seems beefier. I don’t know how an ultimak would clamp.
-yes Chiappa and it takes akm furniture.
-the front sight was canted enough for me to install an rpk rear sight
-the optic is a sig Romeo 5. They are fantastic I have like 6 of them.

There's actually plenty of ammo to be had for 545. Always has been except for when the 74 first came to america. Check out sgammo. I have 7N6 but honestly would rather shoot just about anything else. Corrosive ammo is a pain if you don't want to clean your gun right away. I've actually had rust on guns before even getting home using corrosive. Now if we can get the price down on these (people have been asking for these forever) then it would be a real game changer.

LOL. They just keep pushing the envelope don't they. That is pretty much a folding stock. If you took the stock in my avatar and cut off the back end and then put a piece of rubber with a velcro strap you would basically have what's in the video
