I took a friend on his first hunting trip this morning. I shot a doe within seconds of parking my car. Didn’t even put on my hunting clothes. Dressed her, headed in, hung out in the pouring rain for awhile. Buddy says why do we go back and you show me how to butcher. I was fine with that. About 30’ from my car we see another doe and he takes it. Bam. His first 2 1/2 hours of hunting and he takes a doe!

Today was my first with my .45-70. Absolutely devastating. She ran 20’ (towards me no less).

Today was a good day for it but a bust. Upper 40's, rain and a bit of drizzle. Heavy fog rolled in so I called it a day around 4:00. I like and don't like this weather. It makes them feel safe and since it's been cold recently they've been moving a lot more and also swung back south onto my property. All last week they were basically north of here and never really stepped into an area I had a chance in (drawback of hunting in what amounts to a rural section of a suburb).

I was out a couple of times- I saw a fat 4 point this morning but never could get an angle. Then no less than nine fat ass fucking does walking around daring me to shoot em. C'est la guerre. I'll be out next weekend for last licks with the gun, hopefully I can pick up that buck. If not I still have a weekend with crossbow I guess.

Still nice to get out, one way or the other- but meat would be nice too. :)

They were definitely moving today. We saw 2-3 other deer that we jumped walking in. I was reluctant to go to this spot because all bow season I didn’t see a single deer there, now all of a sudden it’s overrun again!

I went yesterday and had to get home today for family stuff. I knew I should have stayed at camp. The snow yesterday was too crunchy and I couldn’t sneak up on anything. Saw 8 does though. No freaking doe tag. They are about impossible to get where I hunt. Just read today they have dropped the doe tags 88% in the last few years for that area. I think I spooked a buck, but didn’t get a good look. I’m heading back next weekend.

Packed up some of my meat yesterday with @NirvanaFan but I forgot my shoulder at home, so I'll have to do the grind tonight. Made it a lot easier this year, knowing what I'll eat this year vs last year. Steaks, sandwiches, hamburger, and jerky roasts. Hopefully will make some sausage at some point, depends on how much grind we get, there's a fair amount.

He shot another one yesterday, and I helped him hang the electric winch in the garage from HF. He almost returned it bc he thought the remote wasn't working, haha. Pretty slick setup now, just gotta add something to help hold the coat so we can strip it easier.

I went out a couple of hours this morning, didnt see anything so I'm done. We still have some to cut up later. I will visit some of the family first and get things packed to go.

Annoyed as hell right now. Got out for a couple hours. Was making my way back to the truck and saw 2 doe. Picked the bigger of the 2 and laid my backpack down and laid prone resting on it. She turned broadside and I shot. Both ran to my left and I figured she was down just out of my sight. I was very close to my truck so I went and dropped gear and grabbed my head lamp as it was getting dark quick. Went back and couldn't find any blood or sign of a shot deer. I looked for a. Hour and a half in the dark for blood and found nada. Only thing I can think is I hit a limb I didn't see. Gonna go back in the am before work and look more.

whauburger, This isn't going to make you feel better but it doesn't take much of a sapling to deflect a bullet. A friend lost a very nice buck for that reason. Being the considerate person that I am I cut about a foot of the hit section of sapling, mounted it to a board like a trophy, gift wrapped and presented it to him...

I'm thinking that's what happened. In the morning I'm going to try and line up where I was and see if there's any brush I may not have noticed.

Well I'm loaded in the sardine can waiting to take off to Detroit then on to the Seattle airport.

I bought a medium size ice chest from Wally world and am taking back some of the deer meat we harvested.
Nest year I will buy a larger ice chest. You are allowed up to 50 pounds total for check in with delta.
My ice chest full of deboned and cut up deer meat weighed just under 30 pounds.
Waiting for 2019 deer season.

Had a close encounter yesterday evening with 1 minute of legal shooting time left, grunted him in within bow range but had a big bush between us, I tried to make a move but got busted. Hopefully he falls for that again.

I've got a 5R doe permit if anybody needs it.
