Many years ago I was at the SHOT show and Caspian had a stainless steel slide for the Glock 19 - Had to have it!! Wasn't cheap either. When I finally got around to getting all the internals for it I was told that it needed to be gunsmithed a bit to get the parts to fit It's in the bottom of my spare parts/holster/stuff tote. So much for my custom Glock.

Interesting from everything I was seeing was no gunsmithing needed you just need to be able to install the different part kits. That was why I started the thread to find this sort of thing out, so thank you. If I ever do try to build one myself from the ground up I will have to ask the slide manufacture if that is still the case.

That's what I thought when I bought it ( it was probably 15 years ago or more). By the time I got around to doing it Caspian had stopped making the SS slides and couldn't/wouldn't do a customer service exchange. Said that it needed 'smithing. Someday I may revisit that project -or not and sell it.

I still don't have a full size gun in 9mm, so that might be my next build. We will see how I like this new pistol. If I love it I will probably do another custom Glock but with my doing the work. If the gun is so so then I will probably try my hand at building a 2011 from scratch. Considering I will be building my new house soon I'm sure I wont have time for a new project anytime soon.

I was a 1911 fanboy until I researched the .45 Acp ballistics and I bought a 9mm XDS. I couldn't get over the shitty trigger it had and i wanted the higher capacity so I got a Glock 26.

I immediately became a fanboy. I fell in love with the trigger and was more accurate than I've ever been. Don't laugh but the Glock's sights of dropping the ball in the bucket made me a lot faster than 3 dot sights too. I'm a fan of that sight system.

Its like suping up a Yugo, No matter what you do, it's still going to be a Yugo. I do admit some of these after market stylings are much better then the brick look. When i think custom i think performance upgrades if you can style as your upgrade performance then why not.

A Yugo is a cheap car that's poorly built. Bad analogy.

I have to agree with Will poor analogy. If you want compare it to cars I would compare Glock to jettas. The stock model basic utilitarian and reliable. So if slap new rims on your stock jetta does that make it dumb? I mean rims are only cosmetic don't help function of the vehicle.

As I stated above if you removed the the frame work and paint job I'm in the same price point as a sig x series. Which could be argued has a lot of the same features. So now I'm back to which style I like better. Once again as stated above I shoot my stock 43 better or as good as my $1200 full size 1911. Which goes against common sense but the Glock grip angle is more natural to me.

Yes I splurged with getting the "custom" frame work and paint job. But once again some of the frame modifications are also functional and just not cosmetic. Like the stippling the under cut under the trigger guard to get a better grip, dishing out of the mag release to easy in button function and also removing the finger notches that didn't fit my hand right. Now do these improvements justify the cost, no but I didn't want a stock Glock either. So whatever cost difference there is I'm OK with getting what I consider a good looking firearm.

I've been debating on what to take on for my next gun related project. I was going to start a poll and get everyone's opinion, but as it so happens I clicked one internet picture and now I'm obsessing.

So now the next project up to the plate is a custom built Glock variant. The plan right now is to have it in 40 S&W and 357sig. Just like my hunting rifle thread this is open for discussion in all fashion. I will layout my initial questions below.

Does anyone here have any experience doing this?
Any cool pictures or ideas.
Should I start from a stripped frame or get a donor gun.
Is there any unique tooling I will need to install the different parts kits?

Any input is appreciated.

My Delta Elite Gold Cup National Match is extremely accurate and does 1" groups at 25 yards from bench rest. Come to think of it, so does my Kimber Target Stainless II. But you gotta admit - the Colt GC's are damn sexy and Kimber is like "yeah you and a trillion other people own one".

I already own a mid-quality 1911. This is the gun that I find myself taking to the range most of the time. I was looking for a full size striker fired gun. I love 1911 but for now the one I have fills the itch for any more.

You and I are like 2 ships passing in the night. I have my son selling all my striker fire weapons for me right now. Only thing I have decided to keep is the Ruger SR45. I will be getting one more though - I really want an Israeli Jerico. That will round out my Israel collection; as I already have a few Uzi's, a Galil, and an Israeli wood furniture FN-FAL. Would be nice if Cuomo wasn't such a shitstain and we could also get a Tavor, eh?

Is it possible to build a 1911 from scratch using USGI match parts? Which component is the licenced and serial-numbered part - the lower frame? I think it might be fun to build a match quality 1911 from the ground up like we often do with AR's.

Yes the lower frame is the controlled part. You can also get 80% ones, but they are kind of pointless in New Yorkastan. I think dsdmmat has built one.
