Let talk 6.5 Grendel

Muzzle brakes? Linear pushes all sound forward and allows you somewhat of a faster second shot but far from perfect. Regular muzzle brakes blow your eardrums out and lets you perform a faster second shot better than the linear. I prefer linear brakes, they are on all my guns. I value my ears.

Even with ear protection on, regular muzzle brakes percussion is too much for me.

Ok now for a trigger. The trigger I have in my other ar is just to stiff. I'm looking for a 3.5 4.5 lbs trigger I saw this one from Brownell and it looks interesting anyone here have one.

Trigger looks good but its currently OOS. I don’t have that one but I have this rise armament trigger now on sale at Primary Arms ($99) on 2 builds. I like it alot and it's a dramatic improvement over mil-spec.

Are you only going to shoot brass? If so look into this. I have it and paired it with the grip screw. It has a nice light pull but it won't set off steel case.

Just to give my as far as triggers go I have to recommend a Geissele trigger. I know they're expensive but they're worth it and their customer service is top notch!

Also my Grendel build is coming along. Had to stop my lower build because I lost a detent like an asshole. Another one is on the way. Don't you hate it when shipping is WAY more than the actual piece you're ordering?

Triggers are over rated.

I prefer a trigger I can take apart and change or condition the springs if I wan to.
The geisselle 2 stage is what they use in the les baers ARs that are some of the most accurate ARs one can buy.
The Rock River Arms 2 stage is affordable and it works like the best triggers. It can be easily conditioned to reduce
initial pull as well as hammer spring. These are sold by the fulton Armory for competition with many other national
match parts but they can be found for $60-$80 or with the entire lower parts kit for $120 or so.

Spending a lot more money on a trigger is not worthy and it is better to know how to tune up a trigger.
One should have a shrouded bolt with the proper engagement angle for the hammer so it assures smooth
and efficient operation. If you know how to use a stone you can make them make almost perfectly.

Most setups have too much tension on the hammer spring so one can condition the spring a little to find the
spot the trigger works best. Unless something is wrong with the original spring there is no need to buy a
"match" trigger.

Keep it simple. Beware of the snake oil claims and promises out there.

3 lowers, 2 different triggers between the 3. One is a RRA varmint trigger and the other 2 are Geissele SSA-e. The RRA varmint trigger is a excellent trigger but not comparable to the SSA-e. SSA-e has a lighter pull, no creep and breaks like a thin icicle. The SSA-e can be had on black fridays for 180. Thats the cheapest Ive bought one for. The RRA is much cheaper,,,just a guess but I think a 100 bucks. If I didnt have the money or basically the passion to have kick ass guns, I would go with the RRA trigger all day long. Can't beat the price or the quality.

Ive also built my own trigger. Took a regular mil-spec trigger, changed the springs, buffed it out and greased it. It was 10 times better than when I bought it but not comparable to any of the 3 up top.

My 3# Velocity and 3.5# Rise Armament triggers have had no issues reliably "setting off" steel case ammo with the Grendel.

That's good to know. I was looking at a Rise trigger before I got the Velocity. I called Rise to ask about steel case and they said it wouldn't work. They said I needed one of their other triggers that was discontinued. Either way 4# is better than stock so I can't complain too much.

Wolf WPA is the only steel cased ammo for the Grendel. I don't know if the primers on these are different than on some other brands. I have heard this before where you need a certain weight trigger. I haven't shot any steel case in my 5.56 so I have no experience on that.

Speaking of Wolf WPA in 6.5 Grendel, it is about a 2-3 MOA round. Fun for trigger time, not so much making tiny groups. It was found that the bullets are undersized at .262. Several have successfully pulled the bullet and reloaded with better bullets for sub-MOA results.

OK LISTEN UP IF YOU HAVE A MILSPEC TRIGER YOU NEED TO BUY THE JOE BOB' S TRIGGER KIT.
HOLY cow that trigger is now acceptable I really want to get to the range now it was a 6 to 7.5lb pull I measured it a few time and itbwas all over it had a ton of creep and just as much let off foe the reset. It took me 10 minute to swoop out the springs and reassemble it with the new grip screw (put the locktite on the inner screw before assembling. DUH!) Set the the inner screw the was it tells you and in 20 (if i didnt forget the locltite) i have a zero creep 4lb trigger with way less left off for the reset. For under 25 buck to your door stop liven with that shity Mil SPEC trigger.

Anyway a mil spec trigger can be tuned down to 2 or even 1 lbs if one wants. Nothing else is needed.
The only thing is to condition both springs specially the hammer that many times is way too hard to start with.
The condition of this installation is not good and I see this quite often, sometimes you can even hear how hard they have to reset.
The 2nd step to condition the trigger is to start putting force with the lap compound and then let it ride over the sear
while you watch your favorite 20minute show holding whit the palm and pushing the hammer with the thumb.
There is no need to use a stone but if needed might be done so slightly.
Also make sure one has a shrouded bolt with a good angle where it meets the hammer.
Any seams from the mill should not be there otherwise the part is crap but if it has the right tolerances/dimensions and it is the right allow and is properly heat treated that is normally still fixable.
Very simple things that cost nothing and one can have a top trigger as good or better as the top dollar ones.
Obviously we assume a decent up to spec properly treated alloy and not some of the bottom dollar ones
sometimes they sell at model1, psa, blackguns, etc...

Ok I just set up the upper my friend is on the way so I have a barrel nut I took off a older build I did for a friend


That's a bullet guy upper and the forward assist and charging handle are strike industry the barrel BCG and gas system are all Grendel Hunter. I order a Nordic Component 15.5 in free floating tube it should be here in a 5 days. I really wan to get this upper together.

Wow I have to update when I get home the only thing not done is the ejection port cover haven't found the one I want.

I Color filled the NYGF lower Magpul MOE rifle stock, pistol grip, and trigger guard all grey with a Nordic free floating hand guard.

I think I have the wrong buffer in but I'll work that out later.

Been a long time since you updated this lol. I was actually just re-reading this thread about 15 minutes ago, I thought someone had posted what calibers all use the standard AR mag, but for the life of me, can't find it.
I keep tossing around between the Grendel or 6.8 SPC for my next one though.

Since I built the Grendel all the LGS are not shocking up on Grendel but they are on 6.8.
Now I here there a 7mm based on the 30AR case which give a wide range of ballistic from lite bullets 100gr to heavy 170gr.

I was looking at online prices of ammo too, the 6.8 is cheaper at most places. Still nothing like .223, but I want something different lol. Just wont be able to shoot as much.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. The 300BO IS a no bueno I just don't see the benefit to it. Until the reloading crowd started hot rodding it you had a sub caliber round that was finicky with cycling and barrel length. The 6.8 and 6.5 the answer to the military demand for more stopping power and the weight but cost of those two over the black out gave the BO the advantage you just need to change a barrel. The 30AR is better the the BO or was better in the begining.

I think Mek posted a list that compared a ton of different calibers for the AR that included use of standard mags but I can't find it. There's a bunch of dead links for pictures too, I know I checked them out before. Maybe that's why I'm not finding it.
Would be nice to use the mags I already have but doesn't the Grendel and 6.8 need their own mag?

Plan on shooting longer ranges past 3-400yds go with the 6.5 grendel.

Having the availability to acquire ammo local,,,,go 6.8

Dont like the idea of having a 20" barrel or longer,,,,go with the 6.8

I might sound slightly biased but just stating facts how I see them,,,,,,,took my first legal deer down this past hunting season at 175yds when it was running full blast with a reload,,,it dropped at 200yds. 100gr Nosler accubond on top of h4198 powder. I like my 6.8,,,accurate, its a short gun with 16" barrel and very light. Cheapest gun I built out of the 3. I use a 6.8 cproducts mag which lets me reload to a length of 2.26 without any cycling problems at all. There is a manufacture out there that sells mags that will allow you slightly longer reload lengths,,,think its ASC

You can reload ammo for the 6.8 without any problems with up to 120gr bullets. Anything bigger and you are risking jams and losing way to much speed. I like speed,,,thats why I built the 204. Which is seriously accurate with the little tiny Nosler 32gr varmint bullet.

So basically reloads for the 6.8 are 85gr up to 120gr

I got my first deer ever with a centerfire rifle this past fall, 6.8, hand load, 115gr. Sierra Pro Hunter, RL10. Around 125 yards and it went about 40 yards, impacted exactly where I aimed. The gun is short, light, very handy for getting around hill and dale, very consistently accurate.
If you could get every Fudd to hunt with one of these guns, they would never go back to whatever bulky, unwieldy, gun that had been using, and probably actually vote in the next election.

6.5 grendel does use a dfifferent mag. I had read online thag it works with a 762x39 mag. Since I have 762x39 mags I tried the grendel in them and they do work.
