not really. 700 has the most aftermarket support, even if the REM version is of questionable quality, there are enough people making aftermarket receivers to make the most of the system. the 700 platform has basically transcended remington at this point.

It seems there actually isn't a as big a weight difference as I thought after all, not quite 2oz. And the Trijicon has better exit pull size which I understand leads to a more forgiving eyebox? It would seem the latter with a mil dot reticle is the faster and easier to use scope.

Hi,
A tracking is done at a known distance with a known vertical line or square or whatever to make sure the actual correction is what
the manufacturer says is the correction.
The tracking can be done from a fixed setup (Like a rigid bench) or with live fire by grouping and then adjusting and measuring
the impact points at a precise known distance. This is very popular method using a sturdy target support and also bringing a
level or masons plumb. I also used a laser plumb that is very precise.
Of course this is done to also properly mount the scope that must be true to the bore and the axis must be true to the line
between the center of the bore and the optical center of the scope.
A lot of people do not do this unless they are serious about long range. If this is not done there will be errors.
The proper setup and tracking is to minimize those errors.
My long range scopes hold a very small error. They all have a small acceptable error but they have to be of good
quality with proven good tracking.
A precise click also help and tracking should hold at any magnification and parallax setting.
So spend the money wisely otherwise save it and test the scopes if you want.
The Vortex Razor are great scopes for the money. I also like the weaver tactical for a budget under 800 dollars.

The optical clarity and contrast might give more detail even in a scope with less high end magnification.

take better or worse on the different filters applied to the optics.
But starting with high quality japanese or german camera grade lenses is a good start. Leopold also uses very good
glass in many models.

Explain truing the scope to the bore, what does this mean and how can such be ensured? When mounting the scope I had planned on using bubble levels, a secure fixture of some sort for the rifle and some graph paper to align the crosshairs level.

The bubbles are not good. They will get you in the bulk park but what you want is a laser and then a vertical line to run the elevation all the way.
If you can do this on a fixed bench at 50 yards that will get you close but there is no saying what will happen when you start grouping at 100 or 200 yards.
At those distances you will not see the laser and you have to start shooting. The key is that the actual adjustment of the turret has to travel in a perfect
vertical line with the center of the bore. The receiver might not be 100% true to the bore that is not that uncommon and why leveling with the receiver
or rails is not a good ideal.
Also the center of the bore and the optical center of the scope must be in the same line so when we adjust elevation they travel in the same axis.
A small error here will translate in a big error at long range.
If you are not going to shoot long range then do not worry too much about rigorous measuring and tracking. But I always try to do it the best I can
specially if I have a good scope so I do not induce any error created by the original setup.
I would say that 7 or 8 out of 10 people do not have the scopes properly setup. Not a huge deal for the deer hunting or average use but when people
start putting the distance then more times that not the equipment and/or setup is an issue.
I am guessing a bit based on the times I have been helping folks at the club and also preparing for long range hunts so I might be wrong on my assessment but maybe not by much.
The Zeiss is one of the lightest 1-6 scopes on the market. Supposedly it uses the same glass as their high dollar options and it has a unique illumination method with an LED embeded into the center of the crosshair itself. The Trijicon is simple, rugged, has glass with optical clarity on par with the excellent Razor from what I've seen when I've looked through them, and is lighter than many of the other 1-6 scopes as well. I don't see what any of the competitors offer over these two other than a few of them having a FFP reticles which is not important to me given that FFP has its own drawbacks.
Meke you need to understand that this rifle is not a target rifle, it's accurate and all, but it's intended to be my all round SHTF rifle. The scope needs to be light, rugged, fast and easy to use. The Trijicon btw is actually less than many of the 1-6 scopes of equal performance at around 1k give or take, that makes it a fair bit cheaper than the the heavier Razor HD which I recognize is the go to option.

Let me see if I can find it out. Of course if one starts with a rifle build that has been done by a top gunsmith they
might have everything true as they start dialing from the bore and also true the receivers.
But that is not always the case and it is a good idea to follow the process in any case.

Oh, ok.
But if you want to start with 1 magnification is that for close range.
I am asking because there are scopes out there with 1.5 or 2 that will also allow close range work wtih both eyes open w/o any distraction
unless one is going to do a cowitness sight.
and then you have 1-8 and 2-7 and 2-9 scopes including good ones too.
So I figure why not a bit more on the high end? Might not be required but it can be very convenient at longer distances and/or smaller targets.
Or acog with varialbe range that is the mother of combat scopes.
The rifle the scope is going on comes from a manufacturer with a long record of top notch QC and attention to detail. It's provided me with excellent service in the 2 years I've had it anyway. I've got more than 5k rounds through it by now, it's a keeper. I imagine it will need a new barrel before too long here. Good excuse to ditch the gov't profile it's got now.

There are a couple of really nice 1-8s out there now but they are all either too heavy or outside of my budget. I want to stick with 1x on the low end for maximum speed and FOV. 6X is plenty for the ranges I plan to use it at. For as long as my vision holds I will put a premium on clarity over magnification. Never fear, I'll put bigger, more precise glass on the future SPR build.
