It will cost even more soon. 17 rounds just isn't enough so I ordered 3 21 rounders as well.Jokes on you, it will cost more to load that stick than it did to buy the gun
Most good quality modern red dots don’t require the need to be turned on. You install them, zero, and leave them on. Trijicon and Holosun being the top two out there. I would even say that the higher end Holosuns are even better than the Leopoldo DPP. But if you installed any of the ones I mentioned, it’s a set it and forget it type of thing. Though the DPP has a much worse battery life than the others, also not as durable. The newest Gen of the Trijicon RMR being the RMR Type 2 has an automatic mode that it enters after 16hrs since the last time any of the brightness settings were pressed and will display the red dot based off of ambient lighting conditions. So if you store your gun with the RMR in a darkly lit environment when it’s not being used, it’ll automatically go into a a low brightness setting. With the RMR Type 2 you’re getting approximately 2 years of battery life and many have said even more. The Holosuns have the shake awake feature where the user can set it to a predetermined time from the 4 options (10min, 1hr, 12hr, disabled). After the user sets the predetermined time setting, the optic will automatically turn off after it does not receive any input of movement. The optics are also very sensitive to movement. Just lightly touching the optic with a finger will keep the optic on and you won’t have to worry about it randomly shutting off on you. Just having the gun on you and you walking around is absolutely plenty of movement to prevent the Holosun’s to not enter sleep mode. The Holosuns do have the best battery life out of all the optics right now. Many and most models are getting up to or exceeding 5yrs of battery life. That battery life is extended if you utilize the solar panels on the optics equipped with them.I guess another con would be the requirement to turn it on. Of course I could turn it on and leave it on until the battery dies. Maybe that is the way they are supposed to be used. On my comp guns I just turn them on before the stage starts. My laser has a pressure pad for instant on.
I do have more time on target with a red dot than a laser. The red dots don’t have back up irons as of yet. Or at least I haven’t figured out where the things shoot if I line up the front sight with the 2 dots on the back side of the red dot.
My primary carry gun, I use the night sight irons as a primary and the laser as verification I am on target (mainly for night, red lasers are almost useless in daylight). But yeah basically it has the same con.
I do have other guns with lasers (green) but don’t carry them because of the way they attach to the dust cover and finding a left handed holster for the gun with laser is almost impossible. Suppose I could just make my own.
Anyways, I'll be heading to the range tomorrow to zero and have some fun. I have heard that it's best to zero a RDS pistol @ 25 yards. Any other opinions on this?

It's impossible to get the camera to focus on the dot itself but in person it's very crisp, looks to be a 3 MOA dot. The Romeo 1 Pro is rated @ 20,000 hours for battery life and has the auto shut of and auto on features. It cowitnesses nicely with tge very excellent X-Ray iron sights. The X-Rays are the same sights they pit on the Legion models and they are about as good as it gets for 3 Dot combat sights. Not that they matter much here. If the red dot did crap out at least I'd have a really good backup. The dot seems to be lolly popped right above the front post. View attachment 111567 View attachment 111568
Three won’t be enough. I have 8 and need about 12 more.It will cost even more soon. 17 rounds just isn't enough so I ordered 3 21 rounders as well.
I put it on all my optics. While this won't be a carry gun I'm guessing (or carry dot specifically)
May I suggest

Well, I rarely bother with drifting pistol iron sights and just run them as they are since the factory usually regulates them anyway. I will verify where they hit with the dot off. I'll zero the dot @ 25, there not being significant drop with 9mm out to 50 yards.Remember you will end up sighting in your red dot and your irons independent of eachother.
So you may sight you optic at 25y and be dead nuts and it may "cowitness" with the irons. And that is ok..
At first you will probably be using the irons to help find the dot (training wheels) but in the end they are two separate independent sighting systems

Holy cow there papa! The 3 I ordered came to just shy of $200 shipped as it is! It came with the 3 17 rounders so 6 total ain't a bad start. I generally try to get to 10 mags per gun then I level off and pick up the occasional extra.Three won’t be enough. I have 8 and need about 12 more.
Here’s some pictures of the dot com the Holosun HE509T. The dot is very clean and crisp. Unsure of which brightness setting I have it set to. The first two pics are of whoever brightness setting I had it on last, and the second two are of it just one brightness setting up.View attachment 111567 View attachment 111568

You can also see the protective shroud around the red dot. Hopefully thar addresses whatever durability problems its predecessor had. The shroud does impede access to the controls however.
509 is what I'd choose too, were I adding one to an existing pistol. I do want to switch over entirely to holosun red dots at some point, but for now I wanted a pistol that was all setup ftom the factory. Here’s some pictures of the dot com the Holosun HE509T. If I were you, I’d just get the 509T or the 508T from the get-go, and not have to worry about it or feel like you need a better optic later.509 is what I'd choose too, were I adding one to an existing pistol. The Romeo really is impressivly crisp too.
Or get an rmrIf I were you, I’d just get the 509T or the 508T from the get-go, and not have to worry about it or feel like you need a better optic later.
I'm never gonna do that, I will never mess with mounting plates. I want that optic down low as possible and I don't want an extra piece of metal between the optic and the slide. I choose to trust that the Romeo 1 Pro is the improved optic it claims to be. If it is not I will get a new slide and have it custom cut for a 509. Its a moot argument anyway, I am totally tapped now.If I were you, I’d just get the 509T or the 508T from the get-go, and not have to worry about it or feel like you need a better optic later.
The Holosuns have a selectable reticle that includes a circle dot. The advantages of such that you describe is also the reasoning behind co-witnessing iron sights with the dot, use the irons for fast, rough alignment then transfer to the dot.So I went and ordered myself a S&W 642 snubbie the other day. The only thing that was stopping me from sending my Walther in to get its slide cut for a dot is that I didn't have a reasonable back-up edc piece, and the 642 should solve that just fine.
So question for anyone who has a red dot on a pistol with a really thin slide – any recommendations or ones to specifically stay away from? Also does anyone know of one which specifically has a "circle-dot" type reticle? I don't like big dots (max 3 MOA) but I really love a small, 2-3 MOA dot with a big circle around it. Kinda gives the best of both worlds, IMO, with the big circle for quick pick-up and rough alignment with a small dot for precision.
I did, after I submitted it I realized it and then I deleted. Typed “Entered in wrong section”. Then put it where it was supposed to go. Thanks!@Will555 think you meant this for somewhere else. Let me know and I will move it.
Hey Ben, @OnSight Firearms Training, what do you think? p320 RXP compact vs full size. I already have a G19, Shield and PPQ for carry.
