Teaching your child to take responsibility for their actions is what it's about, not "protecting" them. Our society has become one of "it's someone else's fault" and never truly the responsibility of ones own actions. My son is learning at 10 years old the concept of decision and consequence. Once learned, this situation should not occur in the first place. This girl gets a free pass and what does she learn? When does it stop? More DWI's? Maybe one with fatalities? White collar theft? Drugs? No consequences, no motivation to do the right thing? Why can't people seem to get that?

So where then (and I'm looking for your wisdom on this) do you draw the line and decide which decisions should have repercussions and which should just be say "swept under the rug" so to speak? How do we determine which rules are important and others, well not so much? I don't think there's anyone in this country that's not aware of the potential consequences that come with choosing to drink and drive, both financial and the impact it could have on others. So I'm betting she made a choice with that knowledge available. It ended with her being pulled over. No one got hurt. What if it turned out differently? What if she had an accident and killed someone, maybe by some long shot someone you care about? Should the same logic apply? Should she walk away with no punishment because she's "connected"? Should your loved one lose their life with no one held responsible? I;m not trying to get on the anti DWI train but this is part of my point.

Who decides who the law applies to and to who it does not? Is it a matter of money, status, religion, color, or who you know? Do we now have different rules for everybody? What are these rules and who decides? What laws and rules are bendable? Should it just be DWI's? How about shoplifting? Maybe armed robbery? Maybe murder? Where do we figure out which laws and rules are flexible? Should she get off scott free without even a license suspension for refusing the breathalyzer? I think you missed my point. The analogy that you made that getting away with DWI is going to lead to a life of more serious crime is the same argument people make regarding violent video games and that they lead to people actually carrying out violent acts.

At no point did I condone this young lady's actions or did I state that DWI is okay. I also never said that I thought she should get a "pass". The only thing I stated is that I don't think this father did anything wrong or anything that 99.9% of the population would also do if they could.

I respect how you're trying to raise your son and I think it's honorable that you are trying to teach him right from wrong and that his actions have consequences. I even said so in my initial post. I just have a tremendously difficult time believing that if you had "juice" and 10 years from now your child who had his whole future in front of him, made one mistake, that you wouldn't at least try to help him. No reason someone couldn't still learn a lesson from the mistake.

I understand wanting to side on the whole morality part of the argument, knowing right from wrong, and accepting consequences. Reality is much different though and if you had the power to help to bail your child out of a similar situation, I find it hard to believe you wouldn't, I know I would. I got a story for you. When I was 21, I got a DUI (they don't call it DWI) in California as a young Marine. i literally drank 2 beers. I wasn't close to even having a buzz. I weighed maybe about a buck fifty. I didn't learn my lesson.

In 2009, I got pulled over in CT driving home from the range and the bar with my buddy. I was drunk as a skunk. I don't know why the CT State Trooper didn't run a breathalyzer on me. I was totally honest with him. He let me go. I learned my lesson that day.

You don't have to get arrested and booked to learn a lesson. I will have no more than 3 beers within a couple of hours now and get behind a wheel.

Your kid commits a felony. He/she robs an old lady who your kid saw withdraw cash from an ATM. They are apprehended. They face jail time. Your kid denies everything to the cops. Your kid admits total guilt to you in private. A guilty verdict changes your 18 year old kids life and entire future.

You now know the facts. Do you even hire an attorney? Your kid said they did it. The only way to come up with a not guilty verdict is having the defense attorney twist the facts and find some way to have the jury question, 'beyond all reasonable doubt'.

You have connections you could call to possibly make this go away.

Which scenario teaches your kid the life lesson you so vehemently desire to teach? The one in which the system has failed to convict your guilty kid because of a shrewd lawyer? Or one which is as unjust and rewards you because you know the right people?

IMO both scenarios suck and neither teach a good lesson. The lawyer father in the OP case didn't make any threats. He asked very pointed questions and detailed his connections to the community, to the cop. He did what almost any father would do if they could to help their kid. No harm no foul.

No. Passing a schoolbus when offloading is reckless endangerment. Passing one when not offloading isn't.
