But that's the point. Sometimes mistakes are made, even by good kids. It's just not as cut and dry as you're making it seem. Now if the kid is a chronic offender and is constantly in and out of the system I can totally understand making them pay the piper.

I agree with you. To me its about starting out with the understanding that making bad choices have repercussions, not just criminally but throughout life. Many times growing up I hesitated at making the wrong choice remembering what I was taught. I gave my son the cliff notes about the news story and had a puzzled look when he found out the end result.

I agree. I've never said not to lay a good, solid, moral, ethical foundation. With that in mind occasionally the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go astray. A good kid with a momentary lapse in judgment having to suffer the consequences for the rest of their life is an extremely harsh lesson. Unless of course that lapse had grave consequences. Then all bets are off.
