I'll also add I don't think China's troop build up is benevolent to us. I think it's to serve as border control for any influx of refugees should war start and to serve as a deterrent and reminder to us about the last time they crossed that border.

During the Korean War or Vietnam War we were strapped by a concern about low war approval rating at home, and a fear of it escalating into WW III. If we had let everything go full tilt in those 2 wars; we should have handily won each in a matter of months. In the case of present day NK; I believe the Pentagon and Oval Office should consider leaving the UN and producing a few hundred neutron bombs. Literally eliminate every North Korean base, every military manufacturing facility, every military port, sink their entire navy; and then gift what is left to South Korea. Or are the true glory days of conquest over for our species?

You'd think so; but we have about 50x as many nuclear weapons as China and 5x their Air Force. We also have a Navy that is 15x their size. And yet NK seeks to keep poking us. On the surface, yes we could have decimated them with heavy bombing . what the US was avoiding in Vietnam was a second Korean style war where China will not allow the US to be outside their border. WE never crossed the DMZ in force , not because we couldn't do it, but because it would trigger a massive Chinese response.

Seems like the best solution with regard to China is to do something in unison with them. I'd rather see China in NK than that insane kid. I'm sure China could take out that rogue government in a matter of days.

I hate to say it, but the other thing to consider here, is one of balance of power. China is already an economic and industrial power on the rise. This whole situation with NK presents the oportunity for them to flex real military power. What does that do to US power and influence? China suddenly handles and handles successfully a problem that has plagued the western world (the US) for over half a century. Look at what happened in Ukraine and Syria with Russia. They went in and fucked shit up while we sat with our thumbs up our asses. Now we are about to let China decide the fate of the Korean peninsula?

Are vessels tracked closely across oceans? Realistically can a vessel leave port in NK and assume it will get "lost" on the way to the US without satellite tracking or other forms of tracking so that it can pop a bomb off in san francisco bay?

How hard would it be to hand off a palletized nuke to some other ship in a port in the Congo anyway, even if we were tracking them all.

Or some ship out of China or Iran meets a North Korean sub somewhere and picks one up.

Or just drops it off in 50' of water somewhere and some small sailboat picks it up with some SCUBA gear and GPS coords like high stakes geocaching.

That's not how they work.

The technical term for them is Enhanced Radiation Weapon, because they produce much more radiation than a normal bomb the same size. The bomb that kills people and leaves intact infrastructure you can walk into the next day is a myth.

The closest would be a salted weapon that produces a large amount of short duration fallout so that the area can be reinhabited in months or years.

The high neutron flux from an ERW will cause everything in range to become radioactive, not merely contaminated, but will make the materials themselves radioactive.

The tank crew will be killed by the radiation even though the tank survives the blast, but the steel in the tank itself will be activated by the neutron flux and it will be radioactive enough to kill the crew that tries to replace them too.

Of course China would not want to go war, even to defend its border zone, but it has taken on the united states and NATO in NK and covertly in Vietnam. they have demonstrated the will to fight the US several times . Thier history with NK goes back thousands of years, You cant just dismiss their warnings to us about being in their border zone as unacceptable. They have stated that as policy and have acted on it in the past. Would they want to? No. Will they? Their history says yes. The very fact that they have a large military presence there isn't going to be forgotten by US generals .
