NYPD touts rifle confiscation in New Springville

I see they're stooping to taking hunting rifles now.
nope...still not trying to take guns away...

It happened in Staten Island, NYC (NYC requires a permit to posses a rifle/shotgun. )
Looks like wife called the cops about the domestic dispute & told the cops her husband had a firearm.
Turns out husband didn't renewal his permit= confiscate. (the domestic dispute didn't help either)

Wife tells cops husband has unregistered gun, NYgunforum blames cops. Seems legit.

I stop on average 2-3 gun confiscations similar to this one every month (I'm the DV sgt at a different precinct on the Island). I wouldn't have stopped this one. No shot my cops and I get in trouble for yours and your wife's stupidity.

It doesn't say the wife told them. He failed to re-register and they were made aware of this. There was an investigation.

Cops that enforce unconstitutional statutes are part of the same government and part of the problem, just like legislators who pass them and judges who uphold them.

There are 3 branches of government to provide checks and balances to prevent this sort of thing. In order for rights to be violated it takes *all 3* branches to allow it. Legislators must pass it, executive must enforce it, and judicial must allow it. All 3 are supposed to have a veto to ensure freedom is not compromised, and all 3 have in the least shirked their duty in that respect.

I'm sure in the UK when cops arrest people for misgendering someone on facebook, they tell themselves "No shot my cops and I get in trouble for yours and your wife's stupidity" too.

I get that you don't want to stick your neck out for some idiot. Honestly I can't blame you, I don't do it either. If we had people around today with the courage of the founding fathers your concern would be "no way am I risking my and my cops lives to enforce that" rather than "no way am I risking my and my cops pension not enforcing that"....

In the long term things are going to get much worse here. I honestly hope that it goes slowly enough that you can retire before you get to the point where you are asked to round people up for re-education.

I think with the way things are going, everyone working in law enforcement needs to have a serious sit down and contemplate just what you are willing to enforce, and what it would take for you to say no, even when your livelihood or even freedom are on the line. That line may not be crossed for 10 or 20 years, but if you don't have a line, then you'll eventually find yourself doing unspeakable things because "it's the law"

To also add to this, no arrests were made according to the article. I'm not saying they should've taken the rifle, but given the circumstances they didn't try to overly criminalize him over just having it.

I guess we at nygunforum are supposed to applaud the officers for the confiscation of the rifle because well, they didn't pass the law. Stupid us for holding police to the oaths they swore.

We need to realize that there's the internet and there's the real world.

:D so were all other unregistered items that could have caused boldly harm to those in the household or just his boom stick o_O because if they had a family disagreement like every normal husband and wife do unless he' likes Trump and she's a clinton fan :ROFL:don't think these actions helped this situation :popcorn:

I’m always going to be willing to remove a firearm from a DV household when the camera the cop hating public demanded we wear records someone in that household saying, “He has an illegal gun.” No one will ever convince me that makes me an “oathbreaker”.

Domestic Violence officers don’t come to the house for the initial call. This was a visit conducted because the home has documented incidents of domestic violence. She mentioned the gun, no cop initiated this. No cop is going to lose their job over two idiots who rat on each other and will likely stay together afterwards as well. They’re not wrong here, 100% regardless of what any of you say.

No arrests were made because it’s not an arrestable offense. In many cases, with actual bad cops, an arrest is made anyway. So these cops actually knew the law and followed it correctly.
