my ranges top layer of soil is just spent brass. as such, trying to pick up my brass from a semi auto can be a bit of a nuisance. once i get this new ar built though im gonna get some sort of net to try and catch all the brass, and maybe at some point i'll start loading it. even if i don't, i"ll have a bunch of once fired 5.56 to sell.
What kind of accuracy difference to you see between factory and handloaded ammo?
I just finished another 24" bull barreled AR 308 build. I am just lacking the scope and mount to take her out and see what she will do. One of these days I will buy a single huge walk in safe and build a house around it, instead of having a lot of little safes scattered through out the house.
i have a feeling an eotech is on the docket for my NYGF BG build. can run a magnifier if necesary. I'm split between that and possibly the vortex strike eagle 1-8. Maybe if i get some large amount of money for no real reason i'd get the razor HD 1-6. Thread incoming on my options soon. Every time i'm tempted to skimp a bit on the parts for it, i Justify the costs to myself.
The 6.5 creedmoor I used in this challenge will shoot .3" groups with my hand loads, the target I turned in is probably 1.5 at best when you stack all the bullets on top of each other. Most of my rifles will shoot 1MOA on good factory ammo and half that with hand loads. My .300BLK guns will shoot 1MOA with hand loads and 2-3 with factory stuff. The Marlin Camp Carbine 45 doesn't like my 200 Grain SWC loads as much as it like the factory 230 grain ball.
I was looking at getting another Vortex golden Eagle for my R700 30-06 and moving the Nikon Monarch 8-32x40 to the new AR 308. I will see how the new year fairs for financial opportunities first though.
shooting factory match ammo i was looking around 2moa. Using aquila 7.62x51 i was at about 3. with my handloads i can keep it just under 1 consistently with a 3 shot group, i always open up a 5 shot with a flyer though. that's usually me i think.
So, my results seem typical.
Yeah, try some Federal Gold Medal Match to see how your rifles shoot, your hand loads should produce groups about 1/2 the size or better than groups shot with good factory ammo.
how far are you normally shooting? i usually use the 8x on my vortex viper 4-16 for 200 when i'm trying to shoot more practically but i can get a 3moa group with my .300 blk AR with the cf2 1-4. just factory shit ammo.
100-400 yards. I shoot a lot of bench rest stuff with 10 or X rings less than 1/2 (some 1/4) MOA. If you cannot see it you cannot hit it.

I can't wait until I finally do put a scope on my one AR, I want to see if sub MOA groups can be had consistently.
People like to cheap on the Lee equipment, but I've been using it for 10 years with no problems.
It all depends. Do you know for a fact that you're going to be reloading for a long time. or do you just want to try it out. lees aren't bad, but most people keep their rock chuckers alive and well for decades with out an issue.
You can get going even cheaper buying used. Check craigslist, ebay and classified adds. There are some bargains out there. I think I got my Lee single stage for $30 shipped and have gotten a decade of use out of it so far.

Nope, not enough people playing in the 4 catagories we have. I could eliminate rimfire all together but that would be self defeating.
I suppose. The 100 rifle is the scope divison though. At 100 yards the best anyone could do without magnification is trying to hit the paper. I'll try a target at 100 yards with a red dot for laughs though.
I have an AR 308 with a red dot that does very well at 100 on the SR1 targets. Suppose next month you and me post up an SR1 target with red dots at 100.
