Options for AR-15 fixed mag

A couple of years ago I had the misfortune of having some guns end up in the hands of the State police. One AR308 had a spur and two AR15s had fixed mags. With a set screw in the mag release button. No epoxy applied to anything. They were released back to me without question.

Thats exactly why I never understood where this whole "epoxy the nut on the mag lock" came from.

A mag lock is the "compliance" in itself.

There was a NYSP interpretation lot long after unSAFE passed that modifications to a now illegal AW had to be "permanent". Its no where in the law, but many people took that statement from NYSP as an actual legal definition, which is why there are so many fixed mags out there with epoxy or similar on them.

There is no such thing as permanent. Anything and everything can be undone. Bring your gun to my garage and I will remove any lock that you have installed.

Thanks. That's the most logical explanation of where that came from. It was something I never understood.

When I still lived in occupied territory I just put a nut and loctite on my AR pistol in place of the normal release.

There is no way to drop the mag without disassembly.

There is no official guidance on how difficult dropping a mag has to be to be "fixed", so it's all going to come down to your interpretation and comfort level.

Some on here will say "ask a lawyer", but the problem with that is that the law is unclear, so ask 5 different lawyers and you'll get 5 different answers then probably go with the one you would have picked on your own.

It depends on what your intended usage will be.

I bet (merely for fictional purposes on the internet) that many people who go the fixed mag route do so with the idea that it will be their SHTF rifle in a zombies scenario and keep a functional magazine release somewhere handy.

Mine was because I was building an AR pistol toy. It was never going to be a practical weapon (7.5" barrel and 5.56 ammo, you're better off with a 9mm), and fixed mag is the only way to make an AR pistol compliant.

That has obviously been reversed once we landed here in free America.

As far as having it looked at, a few ranges I have gone to here in Rochester take a look before they let you shoot, it has to be compliant, or they won't let you shoot. They've seen my SAFE Mod tons of times, no epoxy over the two screws, and have said nothing.

I got mine 4 years ago for $599.00 used but unfired. Gen 1 also, sent it in to ARES for the trigger upgrade at no charge. Got a sweet AREO handguard from @Robin in a KARMA on here and a 19'' Green Mountain barrel recommended by @dsdmmat, very happy with it!!

Only case I know of happened no too far from me. 2 kids trespassing at rock quarry. Shot hit a neighbor building. Charged guy with reckless endangerment, confiscated gun which had an armr2. This was not long after safe act. Shooter from the other forums was keeping us informed on case, then heard nothing. I believe they probably confiscated, and dropped charges as a plea because that's the last I heard.

And never, would I allow a range officer to become an agent of the State or attempt to enforce any ridiculous powers over me in this regard. If a range rule, private club rule, etc., I would not feed the trolls by participating there. Is akin to buying a firearm at Dick's Sporting Goods... Lolz

Just tell them it's a *registered* AW, no you don’t carry any paperwork to prove it, it's not required, so why would you bother.

The fixed mag is more comfortable but getting all ten rounds to consistently load has proven a challenge. I mostly use it with the minus 5 insert for the p mag and it works fine that way.

A BF 10 loader with a Lancer mag will solve your problems.

I've decided to go the same route with a PSA kit. You may wish to check what generation PMAG you have because they have several generations of the now. Magpul makes fine products, mostly.

How do you figure this is legal? You can separate the upper and lower, drop the mag, put them back together, and now you have a complete rifle that has no mag installed which "is capable of receiving a detachable magazine". Not even close to meeting the safe act standards.

What you have described is a rifle capable of accepting an attachable magazine. There is no prohibition on those.

An SKS is considered a fixed magazine, but can certainly be removed/detached with some work.

We can all play games and dance around online but there is no doubt that if you were sitting in the court room and your rifle was about to be presented to the jury you’d feel a whole lot better with a fixed mag than you would with this device that allows the mag to drop and be reinserted in a matter of 2 seconds. I’m sure the jury won’t see it your way. They aren’t gun people. They don’t know. They will be given jury instructions from the prosecution and they will then see right in front of them how you are circumventing the law and the rifle is functioning just as the law sought to ban said operation.

What you do in your home is your business. But I wouldn’t bring one of these out around others or be driving around with it in my car.

I still don't think that's required to do. But at the end of the day you have to use your own level of comfort.

Personally I'm comfortable with just a magazine lock. The law doesn't state the magazine lock needs to be glued in.

The safe act sucks so bad because parts of it are as clear as mud. It's poorly written and ambiguous

The only thing preventing the mag from detaching is you pressing the release button. Just as a standard setup. Remember. The mag can be inserted regardless of the gun being separated or assembled. End of story. You’ll be eaten alive in grand jury. But it plays out perfectly in your mind.

Also no screwdriver is needed. You’re clearly not familiar with said lock. You separate the upper and lower an 8th of an inch and it releases in a fraction of a second. God bless, you’re gonna need it.
