What where your reasons for getting a Pistol Calibered Carbine?

Mine were based on home defense mostly.

-Same ammo and magazines as my CCW pistol.

-Low recoil (wife can easily handle it)

-Minimal flash (not blinding in dark)

-No Concussion (not as loud as a rifle or shotgun indoors)

-Accuracy (more accurate than a shotgun you can make surgical shots at an assailant holding a family member hostage without hitting the family member with buckshot)

- Respectable Power (chambered in 9mm with a 16 inch barrel at the muzzle a 124 gr has the same velocity as a 125 gr .357 Magnum)

My main reason: If I had to leave home quickly, and I could only grab a pistol and sling a rifle, it would be useful to have them both share ammunition and magazines.

Secondary reason: Damn fun to shoot....cheaply.

Pretty much the same reasons as you Will, mainly:

1) Same magazines as one of my pistols (S&W 5946)

2) easy and cheap to reload for. I can shoot 9mm cheaper than .22.

3) Accurate yet fun to shoot a lot without pounding my shoulder.

I'm planning to speed test some 9mm rounds out of a 16" barrel. I'll test some factory target loads, some self-defense rounds, and then some reloads (because...I need to know where I'm at with my current charge).

I only go to an indoor range. So, I had to get a Magnetospeed in order to check speeds.

So far, I've only tested my 45ACP rounds using a Sig 1911 TacOps (similar to the model in the picture below). I found that my rounds were around 750 fps...about 100 fps slower than some self defense rounds. But, my loads function well and are fun to shoot since they're just so dang comfortable.

In order to test 9mm rounds, I had to acquire a full-sized pistol (since all of my 9mm pistols are compact or subcompact models and will not accept the Magnetospeed rail mount). Ergo, as soon as I get my new Taurus PT92 to the range, I'll get some speeds recorded. At that session, I'll also check speeds of the same rounds out of the 16" carbine barrel (after reconfiguring the Magnetospeed to fit on the carbine barrel).

Same reasons as most. But also partially for Fun Factor. it's cheaper to shoot than 556 and with nearly identical controls the muscle memory will transfer.

Although I have been marinating about it's true usefulness because if I'm going to carry a long gun I wanted to have more power.

My choice is the SP101 and Rossi lever action in .357/.38 caliber which actually gives me 2 calibers.

The reason might be same caliber, even same magazines and faster projectile speeds with better accuracy.
But everyone has their own reason. I see a reason for a pistol caliber bolt action carbine too.

Well, since you asked.
1. I like them
2. Companion gun for sidearm
3. More accurate at longer range. I punch steel swingers at 200 yards with my Henry 41 mag.

Although I have been marinating about it's true usefulness because if I'm going to carry a long gun I wanted to have more power.

It all depends on what the application is. If you plan on going into battle than a rifle with more power and range is needed.

If it is just for defensive purposes in the home or bugging out with your family, than a PCC serves that purpose. It has a range of about 150 yards accurately. As far as killing power goes at the muzzle you have the velocity of a .357 Magnum and at 100 yards it slows back down to a 9mm pistol at the muzzle.

Having just one caliber is a huge plus.

* I have 4-15 round mags and 1-33 round stick (plenty of fire power if needed)
* My JRC takedown eats my reloads like they are candy

If you can carry a subgun in compact form then I can see an argument for a pistol caliber.

But to carry a rifle size gun in a pistol caliber instead of the same gun in a rifle caliber - can't see why. If common ammo is the issue I'd sooner give up the pistol than switch to a pistol caliber AR15.

I'd agree with you if it was for offensive purposes but for defensive purposes, I'll never take a shot over 100 yards anyway so the extra weight of carrying ammo in a rifle caliber is not worth it to me.

And no way I'll ever dump the pistol. The concealed pistol is more important than a rifle in a defensive situation on the road in my opinion.

I personally really like the idea of a semi auto pistol caliber carbine.

But I'm having real difficulty finding "legal" options in this stupid state.

Even a super cheap, reliable, basic carbine like a hipoint is illegal here. So annoying

My paring is my Smith 686P 4" and my Rugsr 77/357.
Both shoot 38 Spec and 357 Mag amazingly Accurately

And my many 22LR handguns and rifles!

In NY, aside from the AR with adapted stock, Regular AR (for the privileged elite) or M1 semi/Citadel I think the classics are the most popular, some very easy for caliber conversion...

Here's some information:

Pistol vs Carbine and differences in ammunition performance.

As you can see a given round does gain velocity and expansion from the longer barrel (as expected). This may or may not be a good thing depending on what you are looking for. Due to the increased expansion, penetration was lessened a bit due to the bullet offering a larger surface area and thus more resistance through the medium. However, with full metal jackets there is a bit of a different story as the velocity is also increased but I was not able to measure penetration as the rounds penetrated both gel blocks. I believe this is a good enough reason to have a carbine for home defense but does not show such a gain to discount a handgun. Now I realize there are many more quality defensive rounds in 9mm Luger but these three represent a great cross section from the Critical Defense, to the jacketed hollow point, to the Guard Dog ​

I believe for a NY family who don't have access to handguns for whatever reason (no pistol permit) a PCC is a better option in the home than a shotgun or rifle due to recoil, flash, and overpenetration.

Ever listen to a shotgun or rifle indoors with no hearing protection?

Concussion is another factor. I was at an indoor range placing black stickers on my targets and a guy in the stall to my right fired his 12 gauge. It knocked the target right off my cardboard. In a tight hallway, this can have an effect on you along with the lack of hearing protection.

And last but not least, our little ladies can put more rounds on target faster if needed then with a pump 12 gauge.
