Ruger Carbine Takedown !

For off hand shooting weight distribution has a huge part in accuracy, for me anyway. A slight 'barrel heavy' helps. Many of the muzzleloaders I make are in the 6-7 pound range with swamped (tapered and flared) barrels, 44"-46" long. That little bit extra weight at the end of the barrel has a big stabilizing effect. Probably a real competition shooter could explain it better.

I picked up my Carbine about 2 weeks ago. I am trying this little bushnell red dot tonight to see how I like it. I also bought a sight mark wolverine red dot I’m going to try both. I like the small size of the bushnell, but the sightmark takes a AA battery which is also a nice feature.

@Camaro45th I also have a small red-dot I picked you at a gun show that I was going to use on my PC9 but the plastic base is cracked, I'm going to try and JB glue it! Til then I have a Tru-Glo on it,

I know exactly what you mean. For the past 2 days I've been shooting my AR with a silencer mounted. That extra 17 ounces or so on the end really makes a difference in muzzle rise. That coupled with a c clamp hold I was able to shoot a target from about 30 yards super fast and keep all rounds in a reasonable group for how fast I was shooting. The sight picture is very odd too because it basically doesn't move. I shoot with 2 eyes open and looking through the peep sight it's like you're a spectator and not actually shooting the gun because it stays so still. I can only explain it like your shooting a gun in first person view in a video game.

There are some guns that you expect to be heavy. A precision bench gun, a large caliber magnum revolver........... or a semi auto 308*cough*. But a PCC I expect to be pretty light. I don't really like the Just Right Carbines because they are so damn heavy for what they are, even if tbey are a quality firearm. Now like I say the Ruger isn't excessively heavy, its borderline. The Berreta CX4 Storm meanwhile, is quite light and very handy but still solid feeling. The Sub 2000 is even lighter, but has its own issues. I will say though that for whatever its faults may be when I heft a Sub 2000 the combination of its lack of weight combined with its paradoxical feeling of solidity is very appealing. If they actually ran reliably and didn't, apparently, blow up I'd have bought one long ago.
I wonder if a lighter profile on the Ruger's barrel wouldn't help?

I suppose the aftermarket will address this soon (pencil barrel, lightweight stock?), but I'd rather it come from the factory closer to 5 lbs.

@Podmonkey , an AR pistol with a 10.5 inch barrel will weigh about 5 pounds and be handier. Less even if you build it yourself with lightweight parts.

I got to the range last night. I really wanted to like this sight. But I had problems with it. Between turning off from recoil, and having red glare lines inside, I was a bit unhappy. I will be sending it back. I also have a Sightmark Wolverine CSR, that did perform a bit better, but it thinking of ditching the red dot altogether. I really like the red dot, but I could barely see the target at 25 yards. Now I’m trying to figure out a decent scope to go with. I was looking at the Nikon Buckmasters II 3x9x40.

I also was having issues with ejection with the gun, this is the second outing with it. I have to clean and lubricate it and hopefully I’ll go out with Iron sights this weekend and try to put some more ammo through it to see if I can kick the ejection issues.

Any other optics recommendations are welcome. Not looking to spend a crazy amount. I usually only shoot 25 yards and on occasion, 100 yards.

You get what you pay for. Best budget red dot is the Bushnell TRS-25:

Anything under that is gonna be garbage.
For a little more the red dots from Primary Arms or Holosun represent a significant step up in durability.

I have a SPARC AR coming for my Ruger.

I already have this on another gun. Wanted something different. I could easily just swap it over if I wanted.
The TRS-25 was about 60 when I bought it. The other 2 were more $ than that. The bushnell micro red dot is about $100 more than the trs25. I love the red dot but idk if they worth it. Maybe something magnified would be. I have a VISM lighted recticle with a green laser on one of my ARs. That was about the same price as the micro.

I’m just not sure what I want to do. For certain, they both are going back. Whether or not I want to put a regular ol’ scope on or something more fancy is still up for debate.

Yeah I really wanted to like this thing. It’s so small and fits into the rail so discreetly. But a few reasons are why it’s going back. One of the other reasons i didn’t like it was that when adjusting your windage and elevation, you didn’t feel any “clicks” it just free spins and you have to line up with the hash marks. My biggest problem was the reflected light back into the glass. At home it looked great. Once being used, idk if the recoil was shaking it around but I have no desire to have a sight that’s going to be more of a PITA than it’s worth.

Of course I didn’t see it in time, I bought and received a Vortex Spitfire 3X Prism Scope. Just mounted up yesterday. Seems to be well made, I’m hoping to get to the range in the next couple of days.
The reticle is calibrated for 5.56, so the bullet drop at longer yardage won’t be as accurate. I’ll try to just set the main crosshair and see how it goes. (I really don’t shoot much long distance anyway.)

This was the Bushnell AR Optics Advance Micro Red Dot. It was about $160ish from Optics Planet.

Did a quick visit to the range today with my Ruger PCC9. First time shooting it. Used the stock peephole sight which I have no clue how to use. Put 100 rnds through it without any problems. I used Glock mags. 15 & 25 yards targets were from standing position. I also did 50 yards from sitting and rifle laying on a bag. No photo for the 50 but they all were on a 12” target. I noticed the farther away the higher this shot.
Next I’ll be putting a red dot on it and take her out again

Trigger is better on the Ruger and more felt recoil in the shoulder.
